Apple care 3yr for an Macbook Pro is £279.00 or $458.00 , that seems expensive to me.

Apple care for is $249 here in the US
You can also buy applecare on ebay. I bought one on ebay for about $160. the buyer emails you the code you register it on apple website on then you are done. Just make sure you buy from a powerseller. There are 1 or 2 powersellers who sell applecare stuff they have like 4000+ applecare thing sold with 99% feedback on those sales. -

Apple care is well worth it.
I've twice had hardware go wrong with my MacBook Pro and it would have saved my hundreds of pounds if I'd have had AppleCare. -
I got mine for 130$
however, always ask for the box!

Some cheap on ebay for just over £100 , but they come from the US , will this be ok used in the UK?

they used to give you the box, but you need to enroll it yourself, via mail (postage paid), or internet.
the box comes with:
- Warranty explanation booklet
- Registration fill out form
- TechTool Deluxe CD
after you send them the form, a couple of weeks later, you will receive a confirmation mail.
Now, they will automatically enroll you, if you bought your product with applecare at the same time. a couple of weeks after you receive your notebook. you will get a post; in it are the CD, and a booklet informing you about applecare warrant condition. and few weeks later; the applecare confimation post.
you can check the warranty status of your mac by either; go to apple.com->support->look for something called warranty checker (you will need to enter your serial number). or by, calling apple - and providing your serial number. -
Ah, the $249 I listed was for the 13" MBP. Anyways for me I bought mines on ebay for $160, they did not send me the box. However, I got the code auto replied to me in 5 minutes of sending payment. Enrolled in online at the apple website 10 minutes later. And then the next day I got the confirmation email and the certificate telling me that my Applecare Protection Plan for my MBP was enrolled. So all in all took about 30 Hours for the whole process.

Lot of money for just an emailed code and no box or diagnostic cd.

I have purchased many Apple computers in the past few months. In my office right now I have 1 Macbook Air, 1 17" Macbook Pro, 1 13" Macbook Pro, 1 24" Cinema Display, and 2 24" IMACs. These are all brand new in the box waiting to get configured. I get about 4 new Apple in every week.
Sometimes we order AppleCare separately and sometimes we have the computers auto-enrolled. For the auto-enrolled computers you can check the status online at the Apple website using the serial number.
However for the auto-enrolled computers I have never received anything in the mail regarding the Apple Care warranty. There were no Techtools CDs included in the computer box or any paperwork regarding the AppleCare warranty. The computers were auto-enrolled, but it is really up to you to verify that by running the serial number online.

Even if you buy the box, the onlything that is in it is instructions on how to enroll, and information of the warranty all of which can be found online, and the Tech Tools CD which can also be downloaded online from apples website. So everything you get in the box except the code get be downloaded online

Bearing in mind that you'll be using it more often than any other actually 'premium' laptop, it's definitely worth getting.
With auto-enroll, you should get an envelope in the shipping package, which contains the documentation and the Tech Tools discs. These days I order Applecare separately as autoenroll can be a pain in the neck sometimes, especially if you've ordered a bunch of machines + screens at the same time, and sorting it out with Applecare agents can be extremely long-winded.
Autoenroll or not, your warranty status can be queried online.
