AppleCare can require you to provide proof of original purchase so, while you likely could register it, if Apple requested proof of purchase to proceed with warranty work you would not have it and (thus) you'd have to pay for the repairs.

Given that AC is $250 for MBP, it's not a risk I would suggest taking. If you purchase a refurbished MB/MBP from Apple, then you can add ACare onto that.

Such is the price of purchasing on the used market, and you shouldn't expect to be able to enter into an extended warranty on a used piece of electronics, anyway.

I bought a 2008 MB 13 that had a bad logic board, found out it had 3 months left on AppleCare. When I took it to the store, they check the serial number, then I filled out a sheet with my name, etc, and they fixed it.

I work for a service provider, we never have asked for proof of purchase unless the customer complained that it wasn't the correct date. We only go by serial number. At Corporate Apple Stores they even reset your registration data so it shows the new owner with no questions asked.

I have checked this several times and never had any issues at all getting a used Mac registered to me.
    Not Ever!

Apple Care is just another item they sell and once attached to a serial number will cover that machine period.

they will re-register it into your name, there is no need for a proof of purchase unless there isn't one in their system.

I'm in search for a Macbook product myself and from what I've come to understand from calling two different stores is that ownership doesn't matter when conducting repairs under warranty. They go by serial number, not ownership.

Call up an Apple store or two and see whats up.

Correct, Apple understands that electronics change hands and they warranty the product, not the original purchaser of the product. Unless there is a flag or something in the system saying the laptop was stolen from Apple, they don't care who has it now.
