I have been on the notebook market for many years now and, after some careful consideration, I have been leaning away from15"-17" notebooks in favor of 13"-14" models that are more portable (I am going back to school in September so portability is kind of essential though my iPad will still be my everyday portable internet device).

I am going to wait to see what HP does with the Envy 14 but I am really considering the 13" Core i7 MacBook Pro. I can get one for about $1200 as I have a friend whose Mom works for Apple and can get me a discount piled on top of my $100 student deduction.

My only worry is that the price does not include AppleCare. From what I have read, I do not have to purchase this right away as I have a year to do some from the original purchase date. Is this correct? I would much rather purchase it later down the line than have to deal with it now as that extra $180 really adds up in the end.

go for it. I had the envy 14 beats and it was fast i was able to game on it loaded dragon age 2 demo fine the only problem was that i got 1 hour on battery life in hp performance mode and a hour 45 in batter saver mode + customizations.... yeah got a i7 13 inch love the battery life got 6 and a half hours yesterday today got 4:50 with playing star craft2 for 3 hours @_@ yeah go with the mac

as for apple care i believe you get a year before you can not use it anymore (fyi) check ebay resellers they have them a bit cheaper

Interesting, I thought I would of had to go through Apple to buy AppleCare. Well, I am not going to order whatever I get until around March/April. My federal tax return will be given to me within a week (which was surprisingly more than enough to cover the cost of a 13" MacBook Pro) but I might have to use it to survive for the month of April if the U.S. government is shutdown in March. I get paid once a month so the work that I get paid in April for the work I did in March. That paycheck will be extremely low if I have to take unpaid time off if the government is shutdown.

So, until then, I am still keeping my eye out for an updated Envy 14 with Sandy Bridge. It is funny as I was originally looking at $1400 17" notebooks with 3D displays but I realized that they would only last for ~30 minutes on a single charge and I could very well need to take them to campus with me and I have painful memories from hauling around my old Dell 17" Inspiron XPS Gen. 2 in 2005. I figured that a small display model would be best and, based on the reviews, that is down to the Envy 14 and 13" MacBook Pro (Sony has a 13" model out but it would cost me more than the either two options).

I have the Envy14 Radiance, and went the other way. 15" 6750m i7-2820. I'm surprised that the weight of the 15" is less than the envy.

Part of me wishes I had the 13", but I promised myself to never buy IGP and so I look forward to what you guys are feeling after a couple of months.

Thank you sk3tch, that is what I thought but I wanted some confirmation before pulling the trigger. I actually just purchased my 13" Core i7 MacBook Pro from Apple. I didn't change anything from the default configuration as I can always get iWork or Office for rather cheap prices ($5) from my future university book store and RAM will cost me $80-$100 to do it myself (I now need to find the correct RAM to buy). It should be here anytime between tomorrow (highly unlikely) and the 4th (I am guessing more around the 3rd).

di1in, you should be clear so long as you buy AppleCare from Amazon India as I don't think you can buy a MacBook Pro in one region and AppleCare from another. I could very well be wrong on this though as I have never dealt with AppleCare even for my various iPods and iPad (I have never purchased AppleCare).
