I'm planning on buying a MBP 2.2 within the next 2 weeks and I had a question about an extended warranty. Should i go with Applecare with the student discount or go with the Best Buy Performance Plan for $420 which includes accidental damage.

I'd go with AppleCare personally......... I've heard too many horror stories about actually getting Best Buy's accident protection to really cover anything.

You might also maybe look at something like safeware.com, which can give you accident protection, theft protection, etc.

Unless you're really careless, the AppleCare is fine. It's probably more convenient to claim on too, since Best Buy is going to try and deny as many claims as possible.

It depends. Best Buy's policy is if it breaks down a few times, then they'll give you credit for how much you spent on your laptop so you can either buy the same laptop or purchase anything else (or maybe just another laptop) in the store. I had my toshiba break down on me 3 times and walked out with a sony to resell =). I believe APPLE care, the best thing that can do is replace your MBP with a new/refurbed MBP, which is fine for most people.

Trust me...don't get the BB plan. They will do whatever they can to sell it to you because they get nice commission on the warranties. At least at apple they will be more honest. all BB will do is ship it to apple for you if anything breaks...and they definitely won't replace it unless you've had "3 major repairs" and even then I don't know.

I recommend no warranty, or apple care at the very most.

Go with AppleCare. Best Buy is known for numerous deceptive practices to swindle customers out of cash and support.

Best Buy is one of the worst companies you could ever hope to buy anything from. I've heard countless horror stories about purchasing just about anything except a cd from that place.

    Greetings,
while i never had the cash to buy apple, i would if i could,
    i did buy a gateway mt 3705 in March of 2007for $649.99
and i was dropped and broken the first month i had it . They couldn't repair it since the screen was an ood size 13.3 inch, they gave me a $650 credit to pick out a new laptop ...pretty cool

I did buy a gateway mt 6705 , and lemme tell you, i have kids and a careless owner , my wife...the screen has been dropped and smashed twice already it cost them 249.99 for each replacement ,power supply die and hard drive failure , all due to her dropping it so many times...

i paid $279.99+ for the warranty for 3 years so far i have had a 650 credit, and a laptop screen that was repaired 2 times, a hard drive replace 1 time, and a power supply replaced 1 time in the first year...

    This warranty is worth it,

The only con is waiting in line ,and the two weeks you will be without a laptop for each incident...

    the mt3705 was 649.99+ $279.99 warranty

I have definitely received my moneys worth...if i wanted to drop my laptop to get a newer model i could ...but he fact that they will repair it at no charge to me, and not question what has happened is absolute gold....

Accidentally drop you mac and see what apple care says????
This accidentally BB waranty is the only one i trust and would go with ....
    no extended or regular warranties
    just accidental!!!!
they must lose money in this but as long as they support my laptop im happy!!!!

Not if you want a warranty for more than a year.

I have a Thinkpad T60 and after about 5 months or so it started having problems. I take very good care of it but it has been having major overheating issues.I am thankful I have a 3 year warranty plan so that if anything serious happens, or when I get another computer, I can send it in for repairs. Having warranty for over a year is crucial if you want the machine to last you for awhile(3+ years) because there are many factors that are just out of your hands, like I learned the hard way :(.

I suppose that is true. My VISA doubles the manufacturer's warranty. I'm personally happy with the two years.

Sorry for the thread hijack. :)

I've heard bad stories with Best Buy warranty...if they can, they will try anything to weasel themselves out of helping you out.

RogueMonk, just to clarify, AppleCare Protection Plan actually is no different than the standard Apple one-year warranty, except it extends it two more years to make a total of three years warranty from date of purchase :).

When my wife bought me my iMac in October/November (cant remember exactly when) she got it from BB, and purchased the warranty from them. Soon as I saw she had bought that, I had her go back and cancel. Applecare was nearly $100 cheaper for the same amount of time.
