no, you won't see a difference in local network speed, unless you have an N capable wifi and router.

also, check this out "Note: The software license for the 802.11n Enabler software allows you to install and use it on all computers under your ownership or control. " you only need buy it once.. it's not bound to one machine..

subnote: think about that.. I won't speculate but the implications are pretty obvious

I know N degrades when you have a mixed network, N and G together. So here is my question, if I have one G and one N with an N router, what is the performance when the G is not on the network, i.e. turned off.

^^^I think it will work as an N network. but yeah it will downgrade the entire network with a G so all computers will work correctly.

oh, BTW if you buy Apples new router you will get the upgrade for free, on a disk. i am planning on getting that router I believe whenever they start shipping.

I would buy that router if it had gigabit ethernet. The Wi Fi on that will be faster than the wired! I can justify getting the AirPort Base Station when I can get something else a little cheaper with gigabit.

I guess this isn't the same as the recent software update for wireless is it?

No, the 2007-001 airport express update was only for security fixes.. Apples page mislead me and many others to believe it was actually a firmware for N, but we were wrong

there aren't very man routers that use gigabit ethernet ports at all, and ones with USB ports as well.

but basically every computer has a gigabit ethernet input port doesn't it?? wierd

I don't know how much of a performance increase there would be with gigabit ethernet ports anyway.

I'm very satisfied with the current Airport Extreme. It detected (so far) 24 other networks. I recognize a few and they are over 350 feet away!! Impressive!

Is this Apple mentality? I just bought a mac book pro with the INTEL wireless n card. Why should I have to pay 2 dollars to get it working? Software probably flicks a switch or something. Has anyone posted a workaround so you don't have to buy this?

Does apple make you pay for everything? Are there no free updates like Microsoft? I am a mac noob btw.

    This is just so bogus.

I may be misunderstanding. Maybe this is just to get it to talk to the air port extreme router...need some clarification. Thanks.

You do NOT need this. Your MacBook Pro is already N-enabled.

No, most computers have 10/100. You can always upgrade you network card to 10/100/1000 if you want, although most newer computers have gigabit network adapters.

I don't think you can find a network card or router on the market today that doesn't support gigabit.
I believe all linksys and dlink units are gigabit now, unless you get a really, really cheap unit. Likewise, I haven't heard of a ethernet chip that isn't gigabit on a laptop or desktop for quite some time. In fact, gigabit NIC have been around, and easier to get for longer than the damn routers.
