Before I use Boot Camp to make a partition, is it absolutely necessary to make a backup? I ask because I don't own an external HDD, and being a student cash is kind of tight so I don't know when I can afford one. I have all my important files on a burned DVD already though. I'm just wondering if this backup it tells me to create will back up the OS itself (so if something goes wrong and it gets messed up I can restore my MBP) or just files I created and don't want to lose.

Basically, will I be in danger of permanently damaging my MBP without it?

Are you talking about this warning from the Boot Camp Installation Guide?

As long as you have your important files backed-up you should be just fine. That's just Apple promoting Time Machine or something! :p

I mean it's best to have a complete backup, but it's not always feasible. That warning is really just a disclaimer and recommendation. So that when someone calls AppleCare or whatever they can just tell you to Restore your system with Time Machine. Problem solved. It's not absolutely necessary though.
