When I get my new MBP I will want to upgrade to 8GB ram...what ram shoudl I get exactly? I dont want to pay for the upgrade at the apple store.

What type of ram does it use? like pc3200 or something? I havent bought ram for a MBP since my 2007 model.

seems like it would be cheaper just to get the 8gb upgrade from the apple site since it would cost 470 to get 8gb from newegg and just 400 for 8gb upgrade on apples website.

Very true. However, why buy memory from the most expensive vendor you can find?

Amazon has it for far less than $400.00, and you would have your old memory to sell/have/whatever.

The reason to buy the upgrade from Apple is strictly for convenience, not to save money. What has to be asked or decided is what price is convenience worth to the person buying it.

Another question is: do you actually have a need for 8GB of RAM? Unless you're doing something very memory intensive (VMs, HD video editting, heavy hi-res photo editting) it's not likely you would actually need that much RAM. That $300-400 would probably be better spent buying the next level MBP with a faster CPU. But that's just IMHO :)

for sure on the "need" question.

because if not, that $300-$400 should go straight to a 160GB SSD.
