What is the best free image editor. Something equivalent to Paint on Windows. I am very surprised OS X doesn't come with a basic image editor because it comes with almost everything else. If it does come with an image point me in the right direction because I can't seem to find it.

Gimp is usually a good choice. There are many other free alternatives available.

Seashore is also a decent program. It's based on Gimp and doesn't require X11.

You want paint? Get Paintbrush. It's a clone of MS Paint that comes with Windows.

I'm downloading GIMP right now and I'll give it a try. Got good reviews from CNET.

I bought pixelmator myself. It's like a paint.net clone for OSX. Very awesome program.

It's not free, but i'd highly recommend it :)

Apple's built-in Preview application has a very nice set image editing tools. When viewing pictures you can edit by using the Tools option in the menu bar. You can even remove the entire backgrounds from pics and only keep the foregrounds.

Don't really want to pay for something I'm hardly going to use. Just wanted something simple and free to do what I could accomplish with paint on Windows. Tried out GIMP and it definitely fits the bill.

Not really an image editor. You can do basic pre-determined markups like crossing out things but you can't take a brush and physically draw with preview.

If by "Paint" you mean something like Microsoft Paint that's built into windows, I finally found a mac equivalent called Paintbrush for mac. It's free and does everything MSFT Paint does. It's here.

Pixelmator is definitely a recommend program! :D It's great, just like Photoshop but for the rest of us who can't or don't want to dish out $700 for PS. You can import PS brushes, with it being a tenth of the cost of PS. Win-Win situation. :D BTW Captain, do you have any tips on Pixelmator? I'm in need of some help on this... :p

How about Picasa 3 by Google? Free and simple to use.

Why would recommend a Windows program? The OP is asking for something on OS X. :p
