I recently bought a Sony Vaio FZ160E, but am reconsidering my purchase. I had originally thought to buy a MBP 15", but thought that a PC laptop would be a better fit for work/play. I had completely forgot about the ability to run Vista under BootCamp etc. So, now I am seriously considering returning the Vaio for a MBP.

The Vaio was bought from the Sony Store, but I am on holidays and don't know what the return policy is. Do you think I would have any problems returning the Vaio for a refund, and then going out and getting the MBP?

Another question...is it better to run BootCamp or Parallels for Windows use?

    Thanks for your help.

The VAIO question would probably be best answered in the Sony forum. Anyways,

Boot Camp, Parallels and VMware Fusion (another app similar to Parallels) all run Windows fine. There's advantages and disadvantages in both ways; with Parallels you can run both OSes at the same time, so you can run Windows apps side-by-side with Mac apps. But the drawback is it consumes more system resources.

With Boot Camp all the system resources are being used to run the one OS you have open, whether that is Windows or Mac OS X. Therefore gaming and resource-intensive tasks run better in Boot Camp. The drawback is every time you want to go to the other operating system (the one not in use) you have to restart the computer.

The sticky Running Windows on a Mac at the top of this forum will discuss Windows on a Mac with more detail.

if you are going to use windows primarily, you might be better off with the vaio. more people should buy sony laptops if their intention is to have a sleek windows machine.

boot camp runs full speed, but the drivers are still wonky and its not very functional as a mobile laptop. that might change in the future, but for now thats just how it is. i would stick with the vaio personally if it works well.

If they offer similair specs for similair price or you'd rather run OS X I'd switch for the MBP.

I'm sure bootcamp will work better later if there would be any current issues as masterchef suggests atm.

And as sam said bootcamp let you reboot and start Windows, and it will be as it is on any machine, with Parallells you run Windows from within OS X but it will get a little slower (probably much slower for games.)

    Vandam,

Did you get the Hi-Color FZ screen or the Eco? I am curious how the MPB looks side-by-side with the Hi-Color FZ.

If you got the $2000 FZ160, then you can get a superior MBP for the same price.

The FZ160 was $1600 Canadian. It is the standard FZ160 with the standard screen. I don't think the higher rez screen is available in Canada.

I've decided to return the FZ when I get back from holidays this weeked. I will order the 2.2 MBP using my wife's educational discount, saves me $200 bucks.

I will reply back once I have in hand, and have tested out OS X and Vista via Bootcamp.

    Thanks for the replies!
