I bought an "open item" MBP (meaning someone bought it then returned it).

A very nice surprise, I checked the warranty status and it says that it is on Apple Care until 2013.

My guess is the person who bought it before me also bought Apple Care on it.

My question, is my laptop covered by Apple Care if I brought it into the store? Or do they ID me to check?

The unknown here is where the Apple Care warranty was purchased from.

If the warranty and Macbook where purchased separately from the Apple Store the original buyer can cancel the warranty and get a pro-rated refund which wold void your extended warranty...

If it was purchased at the same time as the Macbook then I would guess the warranty will be cancelled since it would have been refunded when the original buyer returned the macbook.

The only way to know for sure is to contact Apple. It is possible their records have not yet been updated or they decided to not cancel the warranty.

I would also recommend looking up your Apple Care coverage status frequently to make sure it's not cancelled.

Here's a link to the Apple Care Terms & Conditions which you may want to review.
