    Hello, NBR.

I am very proud to say that (after a long story) I got my MacBook today! I'm on it right now, listening to a Podcast as I type. :) I'm also noticing that the Safari spellchecker has Apple (or general web) related terms built into it - unlike on Firefox. :p

So anyway, I'm very excited about it, and extra happy about the free HP printer/scanner/digital camera printer that I also walked out with. Unfortunately though, it appears I am a MacBook newb, as much as I love Apple. With that, I have loads of questions, that I probably won't even remember anymore, for you guys.

    Let's begin, shall we?
    • Is it possible to stay signed onto AIM when in sleep mode/with the lid closed?
    • I liked the old AIM notices on Windows, for when a buddy signs on, goes away, idle, etc. I noticed that you can do this, but with a popup window, on Mac. I don't really like that; is there a way to have it just come up and go away on its own?
    • Can I transfer the music that is on my iPod to my iTunes library on my MacBook? If so, how would I do this?
    • Are there any FTP programs for Mac? I'm definitely going to need one very soon...
Alright. I did have a lot more things I wanted to ask earlier today, but I forgot them all already, naturally. So... it would be great if you could help a MacBook newbie out. I'll add more questions to this thread as they come to mind again, I suppose. Thanks!

    1) No, the computer is essentially turned off when in sleep mode... the screen and most components are off - all except the RAM I think
    2) I don't know about this one...
    3) I don't think it's possible to do this.. at least not the way you want to. Doing it that way is not possible because it would violate certain copyright laws. You'd have to copy your iTunes library from your previous computer to the Mac using an external hard drive (or your iPod when using it as a hard drive)
    4) Not sure about this either.

Enjoy your MacBook! It's a great machine :)

    1. When you close the lid your laptop falls asleep, therefore it is not possible to stay logged on with aim. You need a program called insomniax, which currently is broken in leopard, you can get instructions on how to make it work here. It will keep your macbook awake when you close the lid.

    2. Yep, I think what you want is Growl. Link.

    3. I don't know how to do that. sorry!

    4. YummyFTP is good, but costs $25. You could try Cyberduck.

To transfer your music: It's easy! You just need a external hard drive, you plug it into PC then plug into your mac! I just did it for my new macbok pro! Congratulations btw

    I'll start with #3.
When you plug your iPod in for the first time there will be a pop up. It should have something about transferring purchases. Click that, & if I'm right you will have all your music in your iTunes library now.

You really are Sam's twin :p

00fez brought it up earlier, but yea I have to say that Cyberduck is a pretty good ftp client.

and mc511 not everyone gets ALL of their music from itunes. If you rip cds and stuff like that, you cant get that by just moving to another pc.

If you want to copy your itunes library form a pc to your new osx, then you can follow this guide
    http://www.tunequest.org/migrating-your-itunes-library-from-windows-to-mac/20061105/

You're not violating any laws by copying music OFF of your device on to another computer that YOU own. Apple just chooses to make it a one way device.

Nope. You're only allowed to download the file once. Sometimes you can email Apple and, if the CSR who gets your email is feeling nice, they'll allow you to redownload your purchased items. For the record, iTunes is the ONLY store that does not let you redownload content you have purchased if it is lost, stolen, etc.

It only transfers items purchased from iTunes. Not other things.

Anyway, I second the recommendation for Cyberduck for FTP.

For getting music off the iPod, theres plenty of 3rd party software that will take the music off the iPod. But you can also enable hidden files and folders with a terminal command (can't recall exactly, macosxhints is a good place to go) and you can pull all your music off that way with no extra software. Or you can bring it over the network, but thats slower than directly taking it off the iPod.

Oh yeah i know that. But if you have purchases i think you can register your computer for that itunes account. I may be wrong.

You can authorize up to 5 computers for one iTunes account to play the iTunes-purchased tracks :).

    No you can't. :(
It'll overwrite the music you already have on the iPod.

    Alright, thanks everyone.

I have the FTP client - it's fine. The AIM questions don't really matter anymore since I don't want to stop my computer from sleeping and use iChat and Adium too.

I'll find a way to get my music. I think it is weird that they don't have an easy way to do this. Again, thanks!
