    Just got this in e-mail:

Crazy stuff. Seems like yet another blow for Sony's quality, on top of the Dell Sony battery recall. I kind of wonder how much companies are going to trust them to manufacture batteries in the future.

DailyTech is reporting 1.8 million batteries...seriously this is getting out of hand! Next time I buy a laptop I'm demanding a non-Sony battery.

I'm wondering if these recalls will affect Sony's quarter profits - they must be taking a huge financial blow replacing all these batteries.

Not to mention the rep blow. They really can't afford MORE bad press. They have a run of bad luck.

Someone in the Dell forum posted a Sony Vaio laptop exploding too - this is getting to be too much IMO.

Yeah, sounds like the 1.1 million number corresponds to the number of batteries being recalled in the US, with another 700,000 in the rest of the world.

Apparantle Qantas Airlines won't allow Dells on their planes anymore. I think we may be on the brink of no laptops on planes at all if this keeps up any longer.

To clarify - Qantas sent out a notice yesterday saying you could use a Dell laptop on the plane...but it would either have to be on battery power only, or if you are using a power outlet on board (Business/First class), you could use the laptop with power as long as the battery was removed.

Note for those who may not know...Qantas is the primary airline in Australia. They are fairly conservative - we couldn't even use mobile phones while at the gate until a short time ago.

I haven't found anything yet on Apples site about a recall yet, I wonder if both notebook lines are affected, if it is this is going to cause problems for me because I travel with mine a lot.

The Apple recall is for Sony batteries in the iBook and PowerBook series, so it should not affect the MacBook or MacBook Pro.

Problem is, this just puts us one more step closer to not being able to take a notebook on the plane...that'll be tough for those of us who spend half our lives on planes. Guess I'll get to read a few more books...(as long as they are allowed).

Ok, I was thinking that only the iBook and Powerbook were affected. The recall for it has been on there for quite a while now, it surprises me it took this long for Dell to finally do it.

I dunno books are combustible if the papers are dried enough. ;)

Or you could be hiding a bomb between the pages. If I recall correctly, on the day the terrorists were caught in London, security would not allow you to bring books aboard for this reason.

My first notebook was a sony, I don't know about others but that thing lasted a LONG time, the only thing that broke (it was my fault) was that I somehow blew out the cardslot in it, anyways the only thing that was getting bad was the trackpad button, but that was because of years of use. I ended up selling it on eBay, kinda wish I hadn't but oh well.

I don't know about Sony's newer stuff, whenever I go to the store the notebooks are just HOT! Much more so than my Macbook during the intital stages of owning it.
