    Hi all!
Sometimes I watch through some Apple related videos on youtube and stumbled upon this one. It starts out normal but gets somewhat, uh, disturbing.. I really muted my speakers for not to get, uhm, frightened. Watch out at 2:18..

It is but he did raise some good points. The MacBook Air is just a useless $1800 toy. It's like paying $1800 for an Asus Eee or one of those other cheap subnotebooks.

I no longer own an Apple but people should do their research. That's how you find out whether a product fits your needs. Everything the guy in the video mentioned I already knew when details of the product became available.

The "oooooh look at me i'm a spaceship" line was classic ! :D

Being an owner of MBA I'm very happy since I can easily use it as my main laptop, while not traveling I connect it to a USB dock which has 3 built-in USB ports, 1 ethernet port, parallel and serial ports, speaker out and a video out. Thanks to Kensington everything I use works. Kensington has also released beta drivers for their docks now: http://ca.kensington.com/html/12158.html

On desk my MBA physically connects to an external DVD-RW, 200GB hard drive.

I hate carrying batteries too, on my old laptops sometimes I used to forget them at home so I think MBA is the best laptop for my needs.

    I left him a nice response :)
People need to understand that just because a computer isn't right for them doesn't mean that its wrong for everybody else too. And someone please show me a laptop that has 8+ USB drives because I've never seen one.

This guy's OBVIOUSLY taking a jibe at critics of the MBA.

And the MBA is an oversized iPod; it is not a Mac, but an iTunes Store terminal.

useless 1800$ toy? i think not.

    its hardly an Eee.

i hope that was forum sarcasm. If i didnt want a larger HD, i wouldve gone for the air. Its a compromise for style, but fortunately, i got both with the MBP.

It was actually not sarcasm though I can understand why you'd think that :p .

My main grudge with the MBA is that because of its small size and light weight it *could* be the perfect secondary laptop/ travel laptop but the fact that it comes with a non-user-replacable battery kind of kills that purpose. Given its size and little feature set I can't see a single purpose for this gadget because it can't be used as a primary computer or as a secondary computer. Of course for someone who loves Apple, they can chose the Air but there are far better and cheaper alternatives out there like the thinkpad x61, the xps m1330, the vostro 1310, the vaio sz etc.

in ALL my years of laptop use, i have never changed a laptop battery out. Im willing to bet that the majority of people are like this, and would be happy to take it to apple come battery time.

you have a lot of great alternatives in your list, mainly the IBM and 1330, but again, none offer the "apple experience" and most come with vista, something that is just pushing people away @ this point.

the MBA is a pretty good machine. Sure its not top of the line, but its fine for most peoples "primary uses". I always laugh when i see people say its not. Its just not the fastest. It will check email, surf the web, and write papers as good as anything else. And thats all A LOT of people do.

First of all, I may have been a little hard calling the MBA a "useless toy" however my point is that imo this laptop can't serve as a primary computer for a few reasons. First of all, most people will need a larger screen. Few want to stare at a 13" screen for a few hours each day. Secondly, 1 usb port is kind of a joke. A lot of people like to use an actual usb mouse, have a digital camera and/or an ipod and in the case of the mba need another external hdd to save their documents, music, programs etc. Lastly it doesn't have a built-in optical drive which would use up another usb port. Of course you could always get a usb hub but merely the need for one or an external dvd drive demonstrates how the Air cannot function as a primary computer. A lot of people also like to have the option of playing the occasional game which is almost impossible with the intel igp that's used in the MBA.

I also think that the MBA can't be used as a secondary laptop to go on vacation because of its relatively short battery life especially since one may not always find a place to recharge the battery. In this case you could just use an extra battery which is however impossible because the battery is not user-replaceable. Not to mention few people would have the $ to spend $1800 on a secondary laptop which also brings me to my last point.

Most importantly the MBA is simply too expensive. Yes it's nice and sleek but if you look at what for instance the xps m1330 offers for $500 less (dvd burner, more usb ports, replaceable battery), it's pretty much a no-brainer... for me at least. About the Vista OS, I personally have never had a bad experience with vista in more than a year but people who don't like the os could always run xp or linux.

My point is that if the MBA would cost $1000 rather than $1800, it would be a whole other story.

omg I don't think I've ever written this much lol

if the air cost that, the macbook would be gone.
    Which is bad.

you must use cd's quite frequently, i simply dont. I like to have the drive though, and use it to burn a few dvds a week. The air would be great if it included an external superdrive, and usb hub for 1500$, theyd sell much more.

Im not trying to argue with you at all, i see all your points, but you have to remember, most people could be fine with an air that was less than 1500$.

    We are not most people.

I had a MB before my pro, and the 13" really grows on you after a while. Sure its not ideal, but it gets the job done. Just like the 13" on the 1330.

i think we've entered "off-topic" zone, ill stop now haha

Ya i agree with that, 1500 bucks including a dvd burner and usb hub would definitely make the air a lot more appealing despite a certain price premium over similar devices.

Good grief. That was hilarious. He's obviously only kidding. I mean, EVERYBODY changes their battery out EVERY day! And, when I go to the coffee shop, I bring 7, 8, 9, 10 USB devices with me! And ethernet? I bring ethernet cables EVERYWHERE! Classic. :D

I'm not a fan of macs, in fact I hate them and I believe they're stupid machines made for stupid people.

And that video proves me right.. only stupid people get mac, and he's one of them! LOL.

First, The smaller a computer get that doesn't mean it gets cheaper for less materials. it must gets more expensive cuz more delicate work is needed on the components.

Second, Who the hell removes their computer battery? Does any of us remove the battery for whatever reason? if he stays on the road a lot and need to change batteries then I guess this is not the right laptop for him.
Think of this macbook Air just like a pocket pc or a pda. u can't change ram and u cant swap batteries...

and talking about pocket pcs brings us back to the ram. Its not their mistake that u brought ram before u checked the computer specs!

eithernet? who the hell uses eithernet? yes I have a cable network at home, and yes I do connect my pcs to it sometimes. but seriously? its not that important anymore.

dvd player? dvd players are waste of space and add of extra weight. now we have huge storage, flash memory sticks, memory card readers... why need a dvd? U want to watch a movie? or right, i forgot... he's one of the morons who buy dvds. lol. God bless the Pirates Bay!

what else did he complain about/ oh right.. the one USB port... well, I do agree one is little.. but seriously, who needs more than two when they're on the move? if u need to hook more stuff then i guess u're not traveling light anyway, and macbook air is useless!

Actually, Lenovo X300 is the best alternative to MBA. Since they are the same price points and you get 2 USB ports, a DVD rw. The only gripe is, SSD is the only HDD option available

People should realize that the whole nation isnt blanketed in WiFi. If it was, MBA would be a perfect notebook. There are times where ethernet is requires. To get that ethernet plugin for MB, it is another $20. Not to mention it takes up the one and only USB port.

Even if MBA costs 1000$, i'm not sure if i will choose it over the macbook. It's more like a fashionable toy than a mac for daily works
