Hello, I am interested in purchasing a Macbook Pro. I am wondering if I should just go ahead and order one now, or wait for a refresh if one is coming soon. Anyone have any thoughts as too if I should wait or just go ahead and get one now?

I know the Macbooks are coming with the aluminum case like the pro, & I think the new Macbook Pro will be Quad Core. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

There's speculation (read: hope) that the macbook refresh will include an aluminum case, but it's just that, speculation.

Yea, bottom line, wait and there will be a refresh coming out soon.

If you want a cheaper MBP, once the new ones come out, buy the old gen for a cheaper price.

Or buy one like me and enjoy a free iPod touch! w00t.. (if your a student.. or my case part-time) :p

Anyway yeah likely based on time-frame from last update there should be some upgrades along the way.

If they do announce a refresh it will either be sooner or later, but not in between Back-to-School. There's usually a delay between an announcement and when supplies stabilize, especially if it's a major redesign as rumoured, so the latest Apple can have a refresh without negatively effecting Back-to-School availability is probably the first week of August. If they don't launch it then, they'll probably wait until the end of September when Back-to-School time is pretty much over.

Any idea what the changes/refresh for the MBP will be? I am kind of in a bind and need a new notebook soon/now, but if the refresh is going to make it worth it to wait a few months I guess I can hold out and wait. But if the changes aren't going to be anything special I might have to just order a MBP now. Any thoughts?

Only Apple knows exactly when, but it's generally believed to be within the next few months.
If you want to get a MBP, montevina will bring very little in the way of updates. Nobody knows but Apple if they'll choose to use an ATI card or not.
For macbooks, montevina will be a pretty decent update. So if you're looking to buy a MBP now, I'd say, buy when you need/want one. :)

It wouldn't make direct marketing sense, for apple to release their refresh before the back to school discount is over. They usually offload their old stock using the student discount, and then release new stuff after it's over.

Exactly. The new stuff will sell well because it is new. This way they can sell off their old stock at a price which makes them more money then a further discounted price would after the Montevina machines are released.

One more quick question, If I buy a MBP right now will it probably have a defective NVidia Card in it? Or has that issue been resolved already?

Yea it probably would. If you don't game A LOT, or keep the lid closed while running, you should be okay. I'd just say wait till the refresh if you're really worried about it.

Ok thanks sulkorp, I've decided to wait for the refresh assuming it comes within a month or two.

BAD advice, that's the worst thing to do where heat is concerned, is keep the lid closed. Heat can build up inside the case (you'd be surprised how much heat actually escapes through the keyboard), and that would be bad.
I did that for a short while with my former laptop, and one time I turned on my computer to find, the lcd was displaying funky patterns and colors, and I discovered that it was caused from the heat. After that, I left the lid open, and it never happened again.
For some systems that have a tighter "thermal budget" (i.e. crappy design, what have you), extra heat buildup could be detrimental.

Hence why I said, if you don't do those things, you'd be fine with current gen MBP. If you do do those things, you're asking for a gpu failure.

So does this mean that Apple won't offer student discounts on the Aug/Sept refreshes?

I'm just sick of the waiting and all the speculation. :( I wish apple would just atleast tell us of an impending update.

Yea I feel ya, I'm tired of waiting also but the fact that all the 8600s are defective/about to blow up is stopping me from picking up a mbp right now. I already returned my xps 1530 because of the nvidia problem, I don't want to have to deal with that again with a macbook.
