Hi there,
I'm thinking about switching to mac (taking the risk) I'm a PC user for the last 14 years or so.
I want to know if I should buy the mac book pro now, or wait for the new one?
DO you know when does the actual 15" MBP was released and when is the next one coming?
I can wait a few months....
What do you think?
Best,
Dan

if you can wait, then wait. but say, if you wait till Jan, then you may worry about next update, say, June, then wait and wait
-
First, sorry for this pun (hopefully you will take it as one) but personally I think you've been taking a risk for the last 14 years using a Windows PC.
The most recent MBP was released in March and generally Apple releases updates every 6 months but that's not guaranteed. If possible there may be a an update around fall but nobody here knows this info as Apple doesn't release information of new and upcoming updates ahead of time. -
stealthsniper96 What Was I Thinkin'?
Yea Apple doesn't say when they are going to release new things. If you can wait, then I would wait for the next one. But if for some reason you find that you need it, then buy it. Thats the advice everyone is going to give you.

Thanks guys!
Yeah it's just very frustrating when you buy your new MBP and then 40 days later and new one comes out, I know that it's always like this and it always will be! But that is why I rather buy one when it just came out. -
From a performance perspective the newest MacBook Pro will offer you very little except to say you've got the newest one.
-
i'm waiting at least two weeks for the next speed bump. let's hope they add a new feature.
-
Here's why I'm waiting:
1. HDMI
2. Blu Ray
3. Montevina
4. Media card reader
5. eSATA
That's what I'm hoping for when they update the MBP. It would be fantabulous if they decide to upgrade the GPU as well. I would absolutely spot if they decide to have dual GPU and SLI. -
^it is free to dream
but actually i m waiting for that too -
two weeks till montevina?
-
I was in your position too...after reading the mac forum on this site for 6 months, i decided to pick up a mbp. I thought about waiting, but since im finishing up grad school this summer, just figured to use my student discount and grab an ipod touch at the same time...If you like the current model and really want it now, i say, why not?
-
Unless they do a complete redesign of the MBP, which i think is unlikely, the new MBP with montevina won't be significantly better than the current ones. It will hardly be a difference.
Having said that, it's always best to wait until you need it. -
masterchef341 The guy from The Notebook
if you want to wait 2 months, wait 2 months.
buy it when you need it.
good luck! -
do you guys think the new one would come up within a month from now?
-
It may come out a month from now. It's impossible to be sure, apparently Apple like to keep thinks on the DL.
-
with the nvidia gpu problems.. I would just wait on any brand at this point..
-
I thought the new one is gonna use ATI chipset.
-
-
I don't think the MBP will get a total over haul, what more can Apple really do? They like there stuff clean looking so that limits it. Maybe some minor stuff, but unless they change the colour witch I don't think they will since the iMac went silver, MBA is silver,MP is silver. I don't think there will be any noticeable changes. I think the Macbook and Mac mini are next. Maybe a new mighty mouse?
-
i had the same question in mind but in the end i just went and bought it today(even tho i already have a decent blackbook)
it was totaly worth it( i love you apple)
oh and i almost pluged my macbook ac to my macbook pro
gladly i checked at the last second -
Mac Mini is most likely next. There is a lot they can do on the MBP's, but i doubt they do it this summer. Probably wait for Nehalem
-
So Montevina, will be a lot better? what is the difference?
-
-
I'd wait for the new one.
-
i'd wait till the new one. with the recent nvidia problem. i'd hold on for any news concerning which batch of chips is affected.
i have a problem with my november 2007 17" MBP; the computer just sometimes would completely froze on me, last time that happens is when i play mpg files in quicktime, then resize it up and down quickly repeatedly (i do it to check how powerful the new gpu is) then it just froze; requiring a force shutdown (by doing the 10 second hold the power button thing)... i spoke to the other guy on other forum and he too have the same problem when trying it out for me. 2 weeks later comes the update, he says that it seems to fix the problem, i havent dare trying to stress my gpu with quicktime again, so hopefully it is just a driver things.
but on the side note, if you get applecare; you get 3 year of excellent apple support, im sure if anything widespread happens to nvidia chips they'll do something fair. apple got the best customer support of any computer system i tried yet.
update: i just found a new info on the nvidia issue:
i just found this; im not sure if anyone have post this yet.
http://news.digitaltrends.com/news-article/17183/nvidia-cops-to-defect-in-notebook-gpus
Nvidia has not revealed which specific graphics controllers are affected. The company says currently-shipping graphics controllers for notebook systems aren't impacted, but Nvidia continues to investigate its product lines and didn't rule out the possibility additional defects will be uncovered.
i wonder if my still recent late 2007 MBP is still affected.. -
Mac mini would be my second choice, but if they choose to update it before the Macbook, I just might buy that instead.
Ugh, this has been a long wait, I hope it's over soon.
Buy MBP now or wait for new one?
