I have sold my current damaged macbook pro. For me adding only $100 and taxes I can get the new macbook pro, and im very pleased. I have some questions though.
1) Can I use a time machine backup to move over to the new mac. If so how reliable is this? If my backup can not fit on the harddrive can I just carry over bookmarks, settings, and select apps? Can I transfer my itunes library via the music folder at my leisure?
2) Can i get the student discount immediately at the apple store? I have a student ID.
3) Do I get the free ipod instantly at the apple store? Do I have to pay for it up front?

Not sure about 1) but:
2) yes
3) yes and you do have to pay up front. You fill out an online form and receive the money back after some time. -
I am glad you were able to sell your old Mac and decided to get another Mac (especially after that crazy thread).
I haven't done any time machine restores yet (recent convert here), so I cant answer 1. Yes, you'll get a discount at the store and you'll have to pay $229+tax up front. Once you get home, go to www.apple.com/promo and submit your claim. I believe you'll still need to cut out the UPCs from the MBP and iPod Touch and send them along with the form. The rebate process is very fast compared to other rebate submission. In about a week after I mailed the UPC codes, the status changed to "we process your rebate and mailed your check".
Good luck with your purchase! -

Thanks very much! Just one more question...Is there a time limit on when I can submit the rebate UPCs and form? say I can get to it for a week or two. (very busy moving, college, job ,etc.)
EDIT: never mind I read the terms oct 8.
Just to be sure about no refresh, im going to buy it tomorrow and not open it. That way I can save the $110+ restocking fee. -
The offer will be for only the older models. Trust me, Apples is not that stupid. They do this to clear out old stock.

I dont think he is trying to say that he'll be able to use the free iPod deal with any prospective new model -in case they announce it on Wednesday. His point is that he would be able to just return everything -hence not opening- and wait for the next generation.
I am sure Lethal Lottery will correct me, if I'm wrong on this, though

I would use migration assistant to transfer stuff from your old Macbook pro to your new macbook pro. Out of curiosity, which macbook pro are you getting? By base model do you mean the 13.3" one?

Yes. Also I do not mind loosing the ipod. Just concerned a minor update or something will be revealed on Wednesday. However I know the chances for this are almost 0. -
ClearSkies Well no, I'm still here..
1. It's a music event, and Apple has restricted the Sept event to iPod only the past two years.
2. The current MBP 13/15 version is only 3 months old.
1+2 = chances really are zero
.
iMac update in the next 4-6 weeks (which is what I'm holding on for -- our Dell 9100 D820 is ripe for retirement), maybe. -
Oh the irony!
I hope you enjoy your new Asus.....I mean MacBook! -
Grab it now while the iPod touch promo is on, if the ipod is of no interest, sell it to further cut your cost.....
-
Just an FYI, today is the last day of the Free iPod Touch promo.
1. I've done this a few times and it's extremely reliable. Use the feature "Migration Assistant" and you can pick and choose what to migrate/import from your Time Machine backup.
2. Yes.
3. Ipod instantly but you pay for it (make sure it's on the same invoice as the mac) upfront, the rebate comes later.
Buying the base macbook pro tomorrow at the apple store. some questions.
