What exactly makes a CPU temperature skyrocket while leaving the GPU temp low?
Right now I am writing an essay on Word 2008, have a powerpoint open, this safari window, and uTorrent downloading torrents.
And my CPU temp rose to 83 degrees C after opening uTorrent.
Why does uTorrent cause such a spike in CPU heat?

It has now reached 88 degrees C and the fans haven't started to speed up yet. Normal?
EDIT: I purposely opened up HD Youtube videos and the temp reached 90 C and the fans kicked in. I guess it's all good. -
yeah... it waits too long sometimes... I just use SMCfancontrol and manually keep my temps down
-
Apple usually tends to let the components run hot, with the advantage of less fan noise and the disadvantage of longer wear over time. Still, 90ºC is still a safe temperature I think. The threshold for Intel CPUs is 105ºC.

I just keep istat nano displays in degree C unit, so at least my laptop looks cooler >.>
-
there is still alot of bugs in utorrent ( 1 of them being using cpu like crazy)
you can try using transmission instead -
My temps rise up to the 70's while using uorrent. To the OP: Check that there's no background application which is running and is eating up cpu resources.

My macbook has never reached 60 degrees. I think 83 degrees for doing those simple task are so high. You should ask a genuis to check on it.
-
it has little to do with the simplicity of the task, but how badly the program is written... if its using a lot of processing time and hitting the processor hard, even if its something simple, it will create a lot of heat... its pretty normal.
-
Yes, cpu intensive tasks tend to heat up the mac quite quickly and to a high temperature.

I have Word, Excel, Encorage, Firefox running at the same time, and the CPU temp is 56. Moreover, I use it on a lap. Did I mention that is hot as hell in this desert city?? My macbook white is used to be cooler
CandianDude have the same thing running and he reached 86 degree C -
I'm running Transmission, FireFox, Adium, iTunes, as well as a VPN client and my MBPs temps are at 113F (44C).
-
My macbook gets the most noticeable temperature rise when I am listening to music and watching movies.
-
All this time, I kept getting nervous when my Mac Pro got over 40°C. (Lowest temp was 25°C, highest was 51°C).
Those things are cooking!
