Sounds like a satisfied customer. What kind of battery life you getting out of it?
-
So far when I'm running in Mac OSX and not running Fusion I get about 4 hours or so. When I am running Fusion it drops to about 3 and a half. I bet I'd get less up time if I boot straight to Windows XP.
-
Great to hear, dbam. Thanks for your insights and thoughts again!
I'm interested in the heat you got, dbam. What tasks were you running when you checked iStat Pro (which got 76 C)? I usually get about 60 C on my MacBook for regular tasks, 70 C when watching a flash video and only run higher than that when the processor is in heavy use like importing photos or running benchmarks. -

This happens in NTFS too. Someone just posted the other day why Vista wasn't seeing 10GB of his new drive.
-
It's really not even the filesystem causing it, when you partition a hard drive you'll see that at the base hardware level only that 150GB is available. It's because hard drive manufacturers sell drives with 1000 bytes in a kilobyte, while everything else uses 1024 bytes in a kilobyte. It's pretty deceptive, kind of like how CRT monitors were sold with the diagonal size including the bezel. It would be nice if, like LCDs, SSDs righted the situation. I don't know how they're being labeled currently.
There is a small amount lost to the filesystem as well, journals and file tables and such, but it's pretty much negligible. -
I guess I was hoping that the file system used by Mac OSX would be more closer to what the drive size really is. Its no matter, I expected this.

Arghhh... I forgot to add a little blurb in the initial post on this thread about the speed of Fusion running Windows XP on it. It is very fast, and runs smoothly when I'm developing with Visual Studio. Expose in Mac OSX is handled superbly with Fusion. All the windows opened in XP show up as separate, clickable regions in Expose and Fusions' Unity feature. That is the best part so far with Fusion and OSX. Windows taskbar is not needed!
-
Ok, I'm quoting myself here...
Question: If I were to boot straight into Windows XP and not go through Fusion, would the fan's run at high speed all the time? Guess its worth a shot. Be right back! -
Now running under Windows XP straight from Boot Camp, the fans aren't running at full speed at the moment. Thats a relief, sort of.

neat initial reviews dbam .... i'll be having questions up for u soon enough ...
...
* did ur MBP come with the ilife '08 suite or the ilife '06 suite? and if ilife '06 ... have u asked them to send over ilife '08 (iv heard they're willing to do that for free for new mbp's?)
* have u tried any games yet on ur windows partition ? -
You know what, I'm not even sure which version is installed... I'll have to look it up when I get home tonight. Is there an "About" box for applications that tells you which version you have?
I have not tried any games on the Windows partition yet. I do intend to put World of Warcraft, Starcraft, Tomb Raider Legend, and Warcraft 3 sometime in the future. I also want to test if Fusion will allow me to run some of those games via virtualization. I know that World of Warcraft will run, but the question is how well it will run. I'm not even sure Legend will run as thats a DirectX 9 game and Fusion only supports DirectX 8.1 games. Starcraft should work without question though.
On a side note, Visual Studio 2005 runs perfectly through VMWare Fusion's Unity. I intend to see if I can hook up the MBP to my TV to see if I could use that to do my work on.
-
Yeaps, if you click on the application name on the Menu Bar there's an About [application] and it'll tell you what version it is.
Well, the easiest way to tell is to see what icon you have for iMovie. Is it a Hollywood star? If it is then you have iLife '08. -
If memory serves me correct, its the "Take 2" icon... looks like I have iLife '06. Bummer. I'll have to check the "About" box and see what it says.
-
Hmmm, bummer, dbam. Personally I'm skipping iLife '08 and I'm buying the next version after iLife '08. If I upgrade everytime Apple updates it I'll be broke (not that I have any cash right now
), as cheap as Apple software is.
I plan to get iWork '08 though. I was planning to get Office 2008 but iWork will do all my tasks needed and also is much cheaper than Office. -
That caught my eye. You should also play Tomb Raider: Anniversary. Legend and Anniversary are both great games and run flawlessly under Boot Camp via XP Pro (something one would expect). I don't have Fusion, so I cannot comment on that aspect, peace.
-
Ah yes, I also have Anniversary. It would make perfect sense that it could also run in as well since it uses pretty much the same game engine that Legend uses. If one works in Fusion, the other will definitely work also.
-
dbam, give Apple a call. I saw they sent someone else here iLife '08, who bought their machine just a couple days before it's release.
-
The thing is I purchased my MBP about 2 weeks before the announcement was made. Therefore, I am ineligible to get it for free. However... I was able to get the upgrade version for the low, low price of $10
. While it wasn't a free copy, it at least beats paying the full price of $80 for it.
-
Congrats!
I agree with Ethyriel. One thing people tend to forget is just how customer-centric Apple is. I think it must be from having to deal with companies where customer service doesn't really exist (did anyone mention Lenovo?) Just like how Dell will offer many bonus accessories to make up for their shipping delays, Apple reps will go out of their way to keep a customer happy.
Like you, many people (me included) were able to get ilife 08 for either free, or for a mere $10 even though the purchase date was quite early. Apple won't go out of their way to screw people over once they're already a customer. A little persuasion and a phone call can work wonders

masterchef341 The guy from The Notebook
wait- people who purchased back in June are getting ilife 08 for free?
*searching for phone + number -
I did that actually and got the $10 upgrade disc. Its on its way as I type this.
Its good to know that Apple support is excellent... I actually want to go for the Apple Care thing now. It could be that part of the higher cost of Mac's comes with the better support people claim to get from Apple. -
masterchef341 The guy from The Notebook
im glad i got apple care. i might just end up calling these people randomly whenever new stuff comes out.
-
masterchef341 The guy from The Notebook
sorry to double post:
but i just called apple care and i was politely told that august 7th was the last day for that. what did you tell them to convince them otherwise / did you buy before august 7th (in june, for example) and still convince them to give you ilife 08?
just curious, does ilife 08 come with a serial number, or do you install it without one? -
Go to the following link, where it has a form that you can fill out to get the upgrade disc for iLife '08. You can fill out your serial number, and "approximate" the date of purchase to be on August 7th. You'll then be taken to the Apple Store where in your cart the iLife '08 Upgrade disc will be listed for $10.
-
masterchef341 The guy from The Notebook
lol. they won't notice that the serial number is from.... june?
and im still curious about the serial number of the ilife program itself. does it use a serial number for installation? -
Its worth a try. The worst that can happen is the system will reject your order. Give it a go.
-
good to hear that you managed to get your upgrade to ilife '08 dbam (would have been great if they did it for free though
)... i just ordered my mbp last night and talked to a rep ... said that my mbp should be coming shipped with ilife '08..
