Hello all, merry xmas! What did santa get you?? I got lots of clothes! But my REAL present is my mbp, which my friend already has in miami (confirmed), all that is left is for the booq mamba pack to arrive at her place, and wait for her to come back to Venezuela on jan 2nd.
Anyway another friend of mine who knows I was getting a mbp surprised me today and gave me original(!) copies of bioshock and gears of war. Which leads to the topic of this thread. As you might have guessed, buying Windows in my country is totally out of the question as it rivals the prices of many mid-range dell notebooks, so is there a place where I can pay for it and download it? Sort of how you can upgrade to WoW Burning Crusade for $30 through wow's website, something along those lines would rock.
Oh, and to the veterans here, I've heard that newer games like bioshock look better on vista due to dx10, so should I go for vista home premium, or just stick to xp pro? I would obviously use bootcamp for those games.

don't places like newegg ship internationally now? or is that out of the question due to customs/import taxes?
i don't have much of a problem with Vista. -
I'm not sure if newegg ships internationally, the problem with international shipping to my country is that couriers here are very corrupt, and addresses aren't as easy as 446 longhorn drive, for example. Workers are always stealing packages and checking them to see if they are valuable (often you get opened packages if you are receiving documents), so if somebody opened my package and saw windows vista, they would steal it and sell it for $800 and people would still buy it cause it's cheaper than normal stores. So digital delivery is my only option for now.

It's the "digital locker download" option. -
Honestly, I'd stick with Windows XP. Windows Vista is a disappointment and many businesses and consumers refuse to upgrade to it. Many individuals are even downgrading their new computers to Windows XP, since new computers here ship with Vista. So XP/Vista will probably have a little war going on until the next Windows operating system is released sometime in 2009 or 2010. Also, the DX10 features in BioShock and Crysis aren't worth the frame rate loss you'll get from running in DX10 and running in Vista.
Out of curiosity, if you're friend is returning with the MBP and sleeve, why not have her buy a copy of Windows XP or Windows Vista. -
I can't ask her that cause last time I talked to her she told me she already had no cash from buying so many things, I bought the mbp from amazon.com and the backpack from booqbags.com, and shipped them to her. I have no more money either, if I did I would ship a copy to her. So yeah I was thinking of something I could do in one or two weeks instead or wait for months until someone I know goes to the states.

What about sending a friend in the US some money via PayPal or something and having them use their credit card?
And from some reviews I have seen, DX10 only adds marginal improvements graphically and performance-wise. It will take a little time for it to mature before we really see the bump. Plus the way Vista is going, MS may just release DX10 to XP after all! -
Yeah I can ask around, I'm sure I can find someone, it just seems like a hassle, something that should be as easy as mac
Anyway you are probably right about vista. I was thinking more along the lines of future-proofing my purchase, but I guess I can find an oem xp pro for pretty cheap these days anyway. And since I only use windows to game or program, I guess I won't be needing vista for quite a long time.
