My dad's Dell computer originally came with a Windows XP Proffestional "reinstallation" that includes service pack 2. Could I use this along with bootcamp to install XP on my Macbook pro, or would I need to purchase a new version from the store. I'm not sure if a "reinstallation" is the same thing as a full stand alone version of XP.

No you can't. Dell's CD will only work on other Dell computers and searches the system BIOS to make sure you're using a valid Dell system. In addition, this would also be considered piracy of Windows XP.

No, they are wrong, that CD will work perfectly fine. I had a Macbook Pro and a Dell XP Pto reinstallation CD and it worked perfectly fine without any issues so go ahead and it should work. worst case scenario for some reason it dosent work and then you boot back into OS X and wipe the partition with bootcamp...

How is that piracy? We already own the CD? It wasn't downloaded illegally from the internet or copied.

The CD you have is for your Dell PC ONLY, not for any other notebook. It is considered piracy for you to install XP on anything but your Dell PC you bought. As for the CD working, sometimes it works, sometimes not, but my friend tried to the same thing, and it messed up his MBP - he screwed his OSX partition in the process and had to restore it.

After looking at Microsoft's website, I'm a little confused as to the price differences and various versions of XP. Could someone provide a link to the type of stand alone version of XP needed for bootcamp.

You should be able to install using that CD as long as it has SP2. I did it with mine as well. I do not consider it piracy as it is commonly understood, afterall, you did pay for the product, in this case Dell, and have full right to use it in whatever manner you deem just as long as you're not making copies or using it on multiple machines - so if your Dell's toast, like mine, then I do not see anything wrong with using it on a new laptop, in this case a MBP.

According to the EULA you agreed to it can be installed on one machine. That's it, no more, no matter what happens to that machine. For each new machine a new copy is required if it is to be done legally. Not that I disagree with your position, I don't, but it is still illegal.
