Maybe I'm just overlooking something obvious, but how do you change the default program for things (such as .avi files) on a MacBook? It's starting to tick me off that everything wants to open in Quicktime, when I'd like for VLC to be my default player. I keep having to use the Open With... menu for everything![]()
The answer doesn't seem to be changing something in the Quicktime or VLC preferences either, since I can't find anything there that mentions default players.
Help, please?
-
right click any .avi file, choose 'Get info'
Under "Open With", select the application you want to open .avi files with and click the button "Change All..." -
In case you don't know how to right-click in OS X...
If you use an external two-button mouse you should have no problem.
Control + Click = Right-Click. And you can configure the trackpad to right-click in System Preferences --> Keyboard & Mouse --> Trackpad.
Also, you don't actually need to right-click anyways. Just select the .avi file and press Open-Apple + I (Get Info Short-cut). Or File --> Get Info in Finder. -
Thanks so much! I knew that it had to be something simple. For some reason, all of the .avi files still look like Quicktime files, but at least now they're opening with VLC

That's normal. I don't know why exactly the icons don't change immediately. After you Restart they should change to reflect the new default application association though.
