My father has engineering software that runs on the Mac Classic, I'm pretty sure the software is a good 15 years old if not older. Obviously, it's not running on his Macbook Pro with a C2D. I don't know anything about macs to be honest but I've done some searching and seems like "SheepShaver" might offer some hope. Does anyone know what my best bet is to run the software? Any detailed explanation would really be helpful.

    :)

I think they might be SOL with Rosetta since the Mac Classic (if it is in fact the Macintosh Classic) came out in 1990 and didn't use the PowerPC architecture, it used a Motorola CISC processor instead. Apple didn't switch to PowerPC processors until 1994 so, unless the software is designed for PowerPC use, I don't think it will work under Rosetta. I think Rosetta only supports down to PowerPC G3 and those didn't come out until 1997 (?) so anything that runs on a Mac Classic likely won't run under Rosetta (if they are under Snow Leopard and not Lion).

I found one article but it is 5 years old so that may or may not apply. They essentially ran some 3rd party software to run older pre Mac OS X programs on Intel based Macs. I didn't see how far back they went. There also might be something in the Mac App Store that can provide the emulation level that they need. The Mac App Store is part of Snow Leopard and above so that shouldn't be an issue.

AFIK SheepShaver is for PPC emulation and not the old Motorola 680x0 CPU, I used to run SoftMac until they shut down in 2008 but Basilisk II was the other main pre PPC emulator I know of. if your software was supported by PPC and later OS8 / 9 then I would try Sheepshaver

The Official Basilisk II Home Page

here are links to the old MacOS since they are publicly available LEGALLY

I cant give you links to system ROMS though as they are still copywritten by Apple
