Isn't the combination Cmd + Shift + 3 supposed to give me a screenshot?

When i tried it today, what it does is a slow motion transition of the show desktop gesture. The window just moves away showing the wallpaper in slowmotion. And now i cant get screenshot to work either. What happened? Am new to mac so dunno if i did sumthin stupid.

I'm not sure what happened with your setup but that's the correct command to do a screenshot as long as you hold down all three buttons at the same time. You can always use GRAB, it's better anyway because it offers more features.
It's in the Utilities folder. Applications-Utilities-GRAB.

Go in System Preferences under Keyboard and Shortcuts where all these can be set, and see what your keys got changed to.

Thanks for GRAB, i had not noticed it until now.

The shortcuts still are the same. The keys work all right and take screen shots for itunes but they do the slo-mo thing for chrome and xcode.

Actually, it's both. Your shortcut allows you to marquee drag the area you want a screenshot of or if you press space and then click with your mouse take a screenshot of a specific window.

    Command-Shift-3 is a fullscreen screenshot.

Is Command-3 somehow set to invoke Exposé? What happens when you press it (in Chrome)?. Shift is a toggle that slows down most animated effects.

Thanks preview, that was it. cmd + 3 was for expose and shift was slowing it down. When i searched I'd been looking for cmd + shift + 3 and thats why i missed it the first time.

So you were doing Cmd - 3 and shift separately? Now, I am excited and wanted to try the slow motion thing.. :D

Since you've got cmd + f3 for expose, pressing cmd + shift + f3 would give you a slo-mo expose. It's might be useful when you're presenting something :)
Pressing f3 + shift as well works similarly.

ohhh... so you were using F3 instead of just 3? yeah the default screenshot keys do not use the top F keys, but the actual number keys :)

You can actually use command+shift+4 I think which would let you select the portion for screen shot and saves on the desktop. After you press cmd-shift-4 it gives you the cursor to select to take a screenshot

A nice thing on the Cmd+Shift+4 option... instead of making a box to select the area you want, if.. while the box selection cursor is up after pressing that, if oyu press the space bar, it'll change to a camera and you can just click on any window and it'll grab a shot of that entire window.
