I'm still deciding between the new MB, versus, things like the Dell inspiron 1405. The biggest point of interest for me currently is the build, plus the MB's excellent 13" screen.
But, every other computer i own runs on windows, i more or less intend on keeping it like this too. I will be running OSX on the mb, but im just interested if documents will work fine on windows pc's (iv been recomended NeoOffice for OSX, since its free, does this use .doc files which work with Microsoft Office?). Other things like MSN Messenger would need to run on it.
It will be for uni, so mostly just desktop use, plus word processing.
Reports of problems with the new MB turn me off it too, ie it running overly hot, going off colour. Plus is it true your forced to buy every new version of OSX? Otherwise with the edu discount, the 1.83gh/z model is only $70 ontop of the e1405, which to me seems excellent.

OpenOffice which has a Mac version is compatible with Office. I personally like the inespensive HP notebooks like the dv2000t or v3000t better than the e1405. If you would something with better quality, the Asus W7j is worth a look.

The W7J is very nice looking, but its definetly not inside my budget.

I just ordered a MB, the discolouration problem has been adressed, and there are many messengin programs, plus the isight camera. The MB looks perfect for school work
-
Man I want one soooooooo sooooooooooooooooooooooo BAD -
They still run hot, even for duel cores. Up to 20dc over some of the other duel core notebooks
-
z35f is the w7j with integrated graphics..this should definintely fit your budget and beat the mb in battery life...heat..and cost
-
Anyways.
Yes the discoloration has been Addressed by Apple, all notebooks are being replaced, and new ones have a new materials.
I prefer iWorks over any other office program, its simply awesome.
Macs make using computers fun again. -
I'm not convinced of the superiority of the 13" MB screens. I've used a C2D MacBook and while the screen is clear and bright, the vertical viewing angles are terrible. I'm not sure if this has been corrected in the new MacBooks.

One note, we are ALL basically "forced" if you want to use that terminology. Microsoft is moving on with Vista and DX10 games and software and Vista only compatible software will "force" you to leave XP and join Vista or switch to OS X. Change is good and it's inevitable with the digital age.
Considering moving to the 'light' side.
