    It is a desktop background for the most part. I'm not messing with the finer points of the interface, I just want to know how to get a dynamic message onto the board in the picture.

    Beats me, looks to me you'll need to write an Application that can replace the OS X desktop with dynamic content via ZenDesign RSS feed. I've seen something similarly done for Windows Platform but it'll be quite a feat especially if you're not a OS X software developer.
