So last week I got my iPod Video from Woot.com, good times. I already had a program I could use to rip and convered DVD iPod's MP4, so I took a couple movies I have and converted them for my iPod (Hackers and Fight Club). After they converted I could pull them up on iTunes and move them to my iPod. All worked fine until I wanted to move the video files I created to my external HDD for storage and it said that there was a copy protection that would not allow me to move the file from drives. I understand copy protection for movies I download from iTunes, but since when does iTunes control the rest of my movies in Windows. Anyone have any experience with this problem? Are there any other video formats I can convert to that I can import movies to my iPod that won't be protected?

I don't think discussion of methods to circumvent DRM is allowed on NBR.

He's not looking to circumvent DRM... that doesn't even sound like DRM, that sounds like an issue in Windows with drive permissions.

This isn't circumventing DRM, I wanna know what other format I can convert my movies to for my iPod so all of a sudden it doesn't fall prey to the DRM police. I don't want to have to rip DVDs every time I format my HDD. Is there some standard .mpeg that iTunes will let me transfer to my iPod?

I'm not trying to figure out how to steal movies I down load from iTunes, infact I have no intention on ever downloading from iTunes store and in fact if I had a choice I wouldn't even use iTunes.

I just installed the WinAmp manager :D so thank you!

But that still doesn't solve the issue with the video files I created and its really frustrating. I'm using Vista at home and currently have XP on my notebook, but will most likely switch back to Vista when I get a bigger HDD. I backup everything piece of media I have to atleast 3 different HDD, now what would happen if I ripped and converted them straight to my external. I didn't bring any of my DVDs or iPod to work because I wanted a day away from my problems, but as you can tell that's working out great.

Where are you trying to move this stuff? Windows explorer? I really don't think it's a DRM issue, I think it's a permissions issue.

Ok, I can see the logic behind that, I've been dealing with DRM rants all week so the first logical thing since it was an iPod format, but when I tried copying the file it did pop up with a message about unauthorized transfer of the file, were would I start looking, it doesn't sound like the normal My Documents permissions.

I go through the ranks of how to take ownership of files so often, I think I'm going to make a topic dedicated to it and just post links to it. (No, I'm seriously going to do this, gimme a few minutes).

Alright, here's my guide. I did it for XP as that's what your signature says you're using, but Vista should not be much different.

Hopefully this will be all the problem was. If not, that topic will be useful to others :)
