    Deciphering apple model numbers?

    I can't find any information on this really. Looking at the clearance and refurb sections of the apple store, they list different model numbers (i.e. 404LL/A).
    How do I know which is the absolute latest (prev gen) model? Do they automatically just choose a higher number for newer models, like say 401LB/A -> 404LL/A?
    Also, do the refurbs come with the latest build?
    I'm just ever so tempted by a 2.4ghz black macbook refurb for $1099, that's why I ask. :D
