This is weird i did not know that AppleCare has changed their terms and conditions. I called up CC to ask how much AppleCare Protection plan was for and they shocked me big time when he said that since my product was bought in July i cant buy AppleCare.

I surprised asked him what i am eligible for and he said an additional 1year warranty can be applied for but not the 3y warranty :( This is very sad because i already had problems with a failed HDD and burned speakers.

    Not according to their site:

    Important Note

The AppleCare Protection Plan can be purchased only while your Mac is still covered under the standard one-year limited warranty. See AppleCare Protection Plan Terms and Conditions for complete product details.

what is CC? I don't know who you called, but you got wrong information.

    1-800-676-2775

This is the customer service department for the online store. They can explain applecare to you correctly.

    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD014LL/A

This page describes AppleCare for 13" laptops. On the right hand side of the page, they explain that you can purchase AppleCare during the first year of ownership. In the overview section, they explain that AppleCare lasts 3 years from the original purchase date with the extended warranty.

By CC i mean customer care, i called Apple up again and it turns out this is a special warranty applicable on student discounted laptops which sucks a lot. I bought it in India and with student discount since i was in the final year of masters degree.

I don't know if its only in India or if it applies everywhere else i was offered a 1year extended warranty which would mean that AppleCare would last 2 years from the original purchase date. I lose 1year of warranty because i did not know Apple has some silly 90day rule for student discounted laptops.

You have one year to purchase Applecare.
If the salesperson disagrees, ask to speak to their supervisor or manager.
    If they disagree, run.

They were just fined in Italy because their standard international warranty offerings weren't sufficient for Italian law. I'm not sure how they will resolve that, but their offering is still consistent between countries. There's no reason any Apple rep in india should suggest otherwise.

I'm convinced you weren't talking to an apple rep. What phone number did you call?

see- this is what I'm thinking. Perhaps you didn't call Apple's customer support, but some third party company who doesn't know left from right.

    Try one of these:

    (91) 1800 4250 744 or (91) 80-4140-9000

    hmm... that's no good.

whatever, just buy applecare and register it to your machine if you want it. Just because they don't know what's up doesn't change anything. You should even be able to see how it works on the box.

I called the 1800-4250-744 number the following is what i was told about the special warranty:
I got angry and after some strong words i got the following replay:
I asked him why are they doing so for student purchases and not retail?
I am quite crossed at them for reduction of warranty from 1+2y to 1+1y for Applecare. Will go to a Apple store in Chandigarh and get things straightened out face 2 face.

On all this commotion i am still not sure i really need Applecare but its a good option to have.

I'm not really sure what the deal is. The people who you are talking to are right about one thing- they don't make the policies. Why can't you just go out, buy applecare, register it to your computer, take advantage of the 3 year (total) warranty, and be done with it? The registration process doesn't happen in any store, you do it straight through apple's servers over the internet.

In fact, just go to this website: https://selfsolve.apple.com/agreementWarrantyDynamic.do

Type in your serial number. It should give you information about your support upgrade eligibility. I would trust that information over whoever this company is. They don't seem to have the right information.

    ^He's right.
Check your serial and just buy Applecare yourself.

yeah, i mean, if you need more confirmation- just call up Apple in the USA and get it.

if you need someone to bully the repair center into doing their job at a later date, maybe call Apple in the USA

I went to the store and made a huge deal about this whole problem. The manager took my MBP wrote its serial no and told me my MBP was bought in March 2011 which was wrong i showed him the bill dated July.

He apologized and went off somewhere, i waited for about 10mins he came back talking to someone from shipping. It turns out that my product was shipped to CROMA in March and registered as sold "I have a suspicion it might have been a show case but my box was sealed so not sure about that :p"

The student discounted laptops DONT have any difference in Applecare coverage from retail. The 3rd paty customer care are very pathetic non the less no one told me my laptop was registered as sold in March. What they were trying to tell me was that Apple care would add 2years to my already active default warranty but they failed to tell me this properly. The 1year business is that if i get Applecare today after 1year i will get another year of warranty... "Ya i know :p"

This whole weird business got me so confused and i never expected that Apple would register my purchase date wrong.

As for the DOP adjust the manager has promised me an update to Apple's database and if it takes longer than 1 month a new replacement MBP instead not sure which one i would get.

Overall Croma gets 4 out of 5 and the 3rd party customer care that Apple India uses gets 2 out of 5. I would recommend purchase from Croma rather than iStore or any other store.

Croma in Chandigarh they turned out to be very helpful.

According to Apple DB i bought my MBP in March 2011 "Which is not true i bought it in July" so my default warranty will end in March 2012. Wht the 3rd party customer care people were trying to tell me was that since my default warranty will end soon, if i buy Applecare i will have 2years of warranty on top of what i already have but they did not tell me when Apple DB said i bought my MBP as a result when i asked how much warranty i will have after a year they said 1year because 1 out of 2 years of Apple care would have been used up :p

This whole drama shows how important a physical bill is.
