I was in a hurry today and I closed the lid of my computer, assuming it would go into sleep mode, and stuffed it in the laptop compartment of my Ogio Metroid backpack and headed off. The laptop compartment is sort of like a sleeve, only built into a back pack.
Anyways, 1.5 hours later I pull it out and to my surprise, it was boiling hot and thats when it hit me that it was on the whole time!!!! All that movement, including being upside down, side to side, etc in the bag, WHILE it was on, probably isnt good for the computer. Everything was frozen, I couldnt force quit or anything. So I held the power button and let it cool down and turned it back on and it gradually went back to its normal state.
Do you think I did any permanent damage to the computer??? This is the first time it happened and it will not happen again. One more thing, does shutting down the computer via holding the power button repeatedly damage the computer?? thx for the help

I saw a similar post about a Dell XPS M1210. You might want to track down that post and private message him. I know the two laptops work differently, but he might have similar problems.
-
probably not. Computers are designed to tolerate heat.
-
You probably didn't damage it, it started up right ^.^.
I'm not sure if it's safe to shut down your notebook by clicking the power button.
It's not he same but I've done it 3x with my desktop...(It froze HD still running) and 2x it did some damage to my MBR and had to do recovery :/
Anyway if the fan's were on they should've kept the inside's cool while the outsides absorbed the heat making it REALLY hot, but the insides should be ok. -
i hope so, it wasnt the heat that im worried about, but the orientation of the computer itself. having it upside down and at weird angles while its operating cant be good for the hard drive...then agian, its working so who knows.

I doubt it'd harm it.
Unless you dropped it or were shaking the bag, I wouldn't worry about it. -
The MacBook Pro hard drive has a sudden motion sensor so I would not worry too much about it until it starts acting weird.

thanks for the info

does the regular macbook have a motion sensor on the hard drive?

I cannot find any mention on the Apple site for the MacBook, but they do mention it in the MacBook Pro. So I don't think so, but not sure.
-
I dout you did any damage to it. I had this happen before and 6 months later it still works great -
This same exact thing has happened to me before. Let me explain.
I was getting ready to go to band practice, and I shut my Macbook Pro down ... and then the screen went black and I shut the lid. I pack it up, go over to my friends house, and I notice the little while light was on , on the front of the Macbook by the hinge button. I said, WTF? I didn't put it to sleep. I pulled it out, and it was freaking hot. I nearly had a heart attack. I tried pressing the power button to turn it on, nothing. So I finally said **** it and I took the battery out, and then put it back in. Suddenly. I'm able to turn it on, and when I did the fans were haulin ass ... you could tell something screwy was going on.
I've hit the Mac people up about this, and apparently if you shut the lid right after you turn it off, this can happen. And you know it will if that light shows up. So now I wait 2-3 minutes before shutting the lid.
There's obviously an issue here, and it needs to be resolved. I read about this happening to a guy in Europe, and he was on a 4 hour flight when this happened to him ... he said when he got to a motel that it was so hot he couldn't touch it. I don't know what in the hell is causing this problem, but it definitely has me freaked out. -
Yeah, when I close the lid I wait for the light to start dimming like it does when it sleeps, then I pack up and go.
Did I damage my Macbook Pro?
