    HI ev-er-y-body!

After reading that somebody voided their warranty in their MBP by installing a hard drive, I'm wondering if I've done the same in my Macbook by opening it up. I didn't actually do anything. I just popped the keyboardy bit off and looked at it, then reassembled it. It didn't actually occur to me that I might not be allowed.

I ask because my line-in jack seems to have stopped working. I'd almost rather that I had voided the warranty, as that means I could sidestep all the bother of getting it fixed, and just live with it... maybe open it up again and really brick the logic board :D

I do not know about Apple's policy on this, but in general, I would say it would not void your warranty to simply open it. However, there are some companies that are very strict about this so I'm not sure.

Upgrading the HD in your Macbook doesn't void the warranty. Only in Pro's.

Yup, cause you really have to take the damn thing apart to replace the HDD in a pro.
But an engineer I talked to says they're trying to make the next version to include an easy to replace HDD.

Congrats on 1337 posts, hollownail. Besides that, I wasn't worried about replacing the hard drive. I actually took the macbook apart to approximately the extent I understand would be required to take apart the pro to swap hdds.

Maybe design it the same way as the macbooks....hard drives accessible from the battery compartment. The battery's right next to the hard drive anyway.

It shouldn't void your warranty to open it up and look into it.

lol, didn't even notice that :p

All I know is, I saw the directions on how to take the pro apart, and I'm confident I can do it... Just not till they get some larger capacity HDD out that are fast...

I doubt there is anything that would tell them you opened it if all you did was pop the top casing (the keyboard part). So no, I don't think so - but technically you are not allowed to do so, so I wouldn't tell any Apple representatives that you did it if you ever take it in for something ;)

Simply opening it probably won't void it. If, however, you removed some of the tape inside that would likely void it. At least for the part the tape was covering. But it sounds like you are ok.

And on a side not, hopefully they do figure out that user replaceable hard drives are a necessity.

Your warrenty is not voided if you changed your HD
