I've been doing some research into replacing the Super Drive on my Unibody Macbook Pro.

This one has been mentioned in several places through out the forums and seem to be a great choice in place of the MCE Optibays.

On eBay though there are a bunch that (claim to) do the same thing. But the price drop is quite significant, eg here, wondering why.

They seem to be claiming to offer the same bay sold by Fenvi

Note that the item location is Hong Kong so could be a crap rip-off.

I too am looking at picking up a fenvi bay and there are the Hong Kong versions on UK ebay for approx £30 cheaper!

If anyone has experience of these cheaper bays i would be very interested to hear about your experience

I have experience from the cheaper bays but only for windows based laptops, and they have been just fine, there isn't really much to it to go wrong even if they are "cheap ripoffs" as far as i can see.

Great stuff, think i'll be having a cheaper one then :)

Has any one had any experience of the cheaper versions of external superdrive enclosures such as this?

Yeah, for the price, it's unbeatable!

I also have experience from that (when i replaced the dvd in the laptops) i used an usb to sata (Which is the same thing you're looking at but without the shell) that are specified for those drives, works great on both the windows laptop and on my macbook!

Atm i'm using the caddy that was in my former laptop with a hdd in it, while using it hooked up with the usb to data caddy on my macbook, works great too. Just saying!
I would definitely buy it again to fit into my macbook (which has PATA connector for the superdrive and not sata, otherwise i'd use my current for this one).. Just looking forward to a fast SSD + a big HDD, it's really nice to have!

If you buy it from ebay, the warranty is usually so good, that if you experience any problem at all, you'll get a full refund without any problems!
