Hi guys,
I'm thinking about making the switch to a MacBook Pro. I want to make sure that if I boot with Boot Camp that the 8600M GT will use DirectX 10 if I run Vista. I am pretty sure it will since I doubt that nVidia would make one without directx support but I wanted to make sure.
Also, what would you guys say about gaming on a MacBook Pro with the 256MB 8600M GT? I have a Dell laptop with an ATI x1400 that plays games like crap (even WoW). I don't do a lot of gaming on my laptop but I want the option if I decide to. Thanks in advance!

The 8600M GT will let you play any game that is currently out (not necessarily at the highest settings at native resolution mind you, depending on the specific game). It will let you play WoW natively at the highest settings.
And yes, the 8600M GT in the MBP is DX10 capable. -
the 8000 serie is Nvidia'S directX 10 compatible lineup so any 8000 card is supposed to be DirectX capable...Although "capable" doesn't necessarly means "performant"
-
Agreed. DX 10 will likely have the 8600 asking for mercy. I have heard the desktop version of the 8600 does not perform very well with DX 10, so the notebook version won't be any better.
-
Though DX9 seems to be performing quite well, Bioshock runs perfectly smooth for me on 1440x900 with everything set to high - Win XP... I'm quite satisfied...
-
How does the x1600 compare with the 8600? (old and new mbps)
-
id have to disagree with this 8600GT to run wow on full settings, sure it will run, but its extremely choppy. It runs perfect on medium settings. Believe me, I tested it
-
os x or win? 2gb or 4gb?
I've also tested Bioshock on win xp with 163.44 with 4gb ram, perfectly smooth - and Bioshock is much more resource-intensive than WOW... -

I'm sort of surprised to hear this about the 8600gt as it was being hailed as the "next coming of god". On the other side, it makes me feel much better about my x1600.
in other news:
WOW isn't supposed to be an intensive game, and can even run fine with GMA 950 (i'm sure that isn't maxed) from all previous reports. You shouldn't be having any problems according to these specs. Whats your test bed like?
PC:
Processor: 800MHz or higher CPU.
RAM: 256Mb or more.
Video: GeForce 2 or better
Hard Drive Space: 3Gb or more available.
DirectX 9.0 or above.
Mac:
Operating System: MacOS X 10.3 (Panther) or better.
Processor:1.0GHz or higher G4 or G5.
RAM: 512Mb or higher, DDR RAM recommended.
Video: ATI or NVIDIA video hardware with 64Mb VRAM or more.
Hard Drive Space: 3Gb or more available. -
It's much, much better. I had a first gen Macbook Pro with the 128mb x1600 and played Oblivion all the time. I could not get good performance out of that game with visually pleasing settings (no HDR lighting for example). Now playing it with my new Macbook Pro with the 256mb 8600 GT, I'm in heaven. Oblivion runs so smooth with really nice settings (I was really missing out on not having HDR!). Heck, even Bioshock is playable in DX10 all settings maxed (lower resolution without AA).

is the 8600 gt in a macbook ddr3 or dd2?

...shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out.
[Isn't the 10-character limit ridiculous?] -
What did you want to post? And that's Rowan Atkinson's live thingy, isn't it? The couple of parts I saw were really, really funny.
Oh, and try using the search function/Google, kevan. -
I was simply going to post "3" to answer the guy's question
no...the quote's from Monty Python and the Holy Grail regarding the Holy Hand Grenade.... -
Ah, yes. Both of them are on my Ipod. Lol. Rabid bunny!

The 8600M GT in the MacBook Pro has 256 MB DDR3 VRAM onboard.
