Why not mute your volume before shutting down? When you start back up it will still be muted.

Right - that's what I do when I don't want to hear the startup sound.

That doesn't work every time. I've tested it and it only works 3 out of 10 times. Pretty random, I'd say...

I don't mean to sound like a jerk to the OP but what's the big deal? Who shuts their computer down everyday? I never do, I just put it to sleep. The startup sound also indicates that the Mac is working properly, it's not just a fun sound to hear.

@hldan, it's not such a big deal, but I've come across the situation when I wanted to reboot from windows, or my battery had drained out, and I had a room-mate and it was 2 AM.

    Not such a good wake-up call ;)

Yeah you sound like a jerk. :p

Fact is some of us reboot to Windows a lot, and it drives me nuts too when my wife is sleeping to have to have the chime ring out while she's sleeping, after I go back to OS X.

Well, since WilliamG pointed out that I was being a jerk I will reply to cdnaisi since he's much nicer.
Cdnaisi, you have a point, I haven't thought about that mainly because I am an old school Mac user. I've been on the Mac since Mac OS 8.5 and all the way until the last PPC Macs there was no dual booting into Windows so the chime sound wasn't a problem.

Can you feel the tension? lol.

Yes I also reboot into windows a lot to play games using bootcamp, like cdnalsi said, when there are other people sleeping in the same room it's not such a good wake up call.

Hm... I installed the newest 1.1 and after reboot the options have been reset - i.e. the mute has been removed. Weird....

someone once recommended me a program called psst it seems to work pretty good for me
only problems are unplugging or plugging in an external sound (headphones speakers) while the computer is off. the computer will ding of you do some combination of that but i havent quite figured that part out yet

Ah, maybe that's why the app isn't working for me. My speakers are still plugged in.

This StartupSound preferences panel only works on a successful shutdown. When the system crashes for any reason, or when you press and hold the computer's off button to turn the computer off, the panel fails to turn the volume down.

A more sound (no pun intended) solution would involve either actually removing the sound resource itself, or removing some setting that links the startup sound with that resource.

I used to plug my earbuds into the headphone jack when I don't want to hear the sound in tiger. I am not sure why it doesn't work nowadays. And Hldan, I always leave my computer off when I do not use it. I am sure there is a lot of ppl out there like me who doesn't want to turn on their computers in the middle of a lecture and have everyone stares at you because of the sound.
