I recently got my MBP and I think that it has a bad optical drive. When I play any music cd, the drive gets very loud or somtimes the drive gets a buzzing sound. Is this normal a characteristic for the MBP's optical drive?

There are some brands of optical drive that are known to be annoyingly loud and buzzing. I myself have had 3 or my last 5 drives on various computers be from those manufacturers and were subsequently replaced on warranty by my request.

Go talk to Apple and request a replacement drive...they should be able to help you out.

Happens on my MacBook Pro sometimes but not always. it depends on if the drive is reading the disk at high speeds (usually after just inserting it). I didn't really care about the noise it makes, since I don't insert disks enough to make the noise an issue with me.

Slot drives are a lot noisier than normal drivers. Discs that are spinning up at very high RPMs will make a lot of noise. With the slot drive, there is no door insulation to help keep that noise inside the case.
    They are normally fairly loud.

ya, mine sounds a little like a jet plane at high rpm. Vibration/rattling should not be normal though. Does it happen with every cd? I've noticed that sometimes burned cd's with stick on labels can become imbalanced in a drive and cause quite a bit of extra noise.
