Does Apple Mail preserve Gmail's conversation threads?

I'm thinking about switching to using Apple mail and Address Book etc. I use Gmail, and the threads are invaluable to me. So I was wondering if anyone would be able to tell me if I configured Mail to use with my Gmail, would the conversation threads be preserved?

Also, would the emails stay on Gmail too? Or just come to Mail?

And, when would Apple Mail start downloading mails? Would it download all the old ones, or just new unread ones?

No, but when you select an email, Mail automatically highlights emails from the same sender.

(Because mail uses pop3 to read emails from gmail and the protocol pop3 was developed long before gmail's conversation threads thing.)

Mail has threads, but not the same way Gmail uses them. I think this picture best describes it:
