I am a soon to be MBP owner but I can't get over the fact that the only color is silver.. I want a black and red MBP!!!

I just visited the site and I will have everything black except for the logo, hinge, and touch pad.. which will be Red... it's looks sick and I want it!!!

But for $670.00, ima wait till Christmas

But Does it void the warranty? It really should'nt

    Statement from Colorware's site:

"ColorWare Inc. is not an authorized reseller of Apple Inc. products. ColorWare Inc. replaces all existing Apple Inc. warranty policies and procedures with a ColorWare Inc. warranty."

I don't think this statement would be necessary unless indeed it was invalidating the warranty. I would say apple has washed its hands of any warranty once an unauthorized company disassembles the product, like Colorware does.

Most anytime you buy something from an unauthorized retailer, you'll almost always be SOL when it comes to warranty issues.

It's like if you bought a new car, had a 3rd-party company bolt in a turbocharger, which subsequently destroys the engine. The company you bought the car from isn't going to honor the warranty because unauthorized modifications were done.

    It's not a modification..

    This warranty does not apply: ......(e) to a product or part that has been modified to significantly alter functionality or capability without the written permission of Apple;

Having the case colored doesn't affect functionality or capability any more than putting a sticker on the case or drawing with a felt tip pen on it.

It's cosmetic.. one of the reason's why I said away from apple.. it's bs

Taking the entire case apart, and dismantling components for separate color treatment is modification enough. Apple's warranty is somewhat limiting to the amount of dismantling that can be done without voiding the warranty.

Whether you like it or not.

Who said it was takin apart though.. even though that's how they do it, apple don't (assuming) could have just painted the laptop 360 degree's

That's why they put tamper resistant stickers on notebook internals. The ones that say "Warranty void if broken." Sure, you could just paint a laptop without taking it apart. If you like getting paint in the ODD slot and the vents.

Bottom line, you will not fool Apple. ColorWare will, according to their site, cover you if you have a warranty issue, but it will take away the option of using your local AppleStore for most support. If you want to have a different color but to keep the Apple warranty, consider using a skin or one of the Speck snap-on covers.

About the only things you can modify on a MacBook (or any other laptop for that matter) without voiding the warranty are swapping the hard drive and RAM (and in some cases the optical drive). On MBPs 2007 and earlier, you couldn't even change the hard drive yourself without voiding the warranty because you had to unscrew the entire case and physically remove the keyboard.

That's just the way it is.

Why are you arguing, Colourware says it voids the manufactures warranty. If you don't like that, then get a skin or a case.

    I'd call Apple and ask...

It may only void warranty on certain parts and not the whole machine... the statement from Colorware is a bit vague... it could be taken a couple of different ways... all of Apples existing warranties and policies on the whole machine.. or on the casing thats being changed out?

Which will assuredly be administered under subcontract by a third-party PC support company, the way CompUSA used to do their extended warranties (which stunk, by the way; had them screw up a MBP but good) for the Apple products they sold back when they had actual corporate storefronts and weren't just a front for TigerDirect as now.

Anyone want to bet against the statement that this will in no way be comparable to AppleCare or Apple's standard 1 year warranty?

*Perhaps* the manufacturer-based warranty on the HDD and RAM might remain intact, but anything else involving the motherboard or connections would certainly be disowned by Apple. And you're right - the only interpretation that counts is what Apple says... however, what a single CS rep offers as opinion may not be honored if/when the unit requires warranty service and is reviewed by Apple Support.

All I can say is: "Wow, $670 to get a different color?"

How about a nice Speck hard shell for $50 that will change the look of your MBP, then you can send the other $620 to me.... :D
