I know for a fact that CCFL displays get dimmer over time, but does the LED display used in the Macbook do so as well? I like putting it on full brightness, but I'm totally OK with it if I have to dim it down to maximize its life.
Thanks

Nope. Unline CCFL displays that get dimmer over the years, they always stay bright.
-
No, they don't! Although I will say that CCFL displays don't dim a ton over time, at least not enough that you would open it and go "Wow, it just got dimmer from yesterday".
-
Yes, but you'd have to have it on a very long time.
LED's do burn out, though not in the same way light bulbs do. The heat
produced gradually changes the properties of the semiconducting material.
This reduces the light output. Many commonly available white-light LED's
go dim in just a few months of continuous use. Low-power LED's, and some
high-power LED's with carefully engineered paths by which heat can be
extracted from the semiconductor material, last much longer.
If you are interested in LEDs there are some great sites out there such as www.candlepowerforums.com

Do the colors fade away with time?
-
I am not sure what style or even generation Apple is using in their new displays.
The LED's are only a light behind the LCD monitor. So the colors are mainly from the LCD while the LED's I'm guessing are only for backlight.
You will most likely never be able to tell a difference and they will not dim nearly as fast as the older cathode type generation of lighting in LCD monitors.
The LED monitors are brighter, more durable, and last longer then the old style. -
Yes, LEDs dim over time, but take much longer. Longer that you'd probably use the screen for. The nice thing is that they're almost 100% brightness the second you turn the screen on. My CCFL screens take some minutes to achieve the brightness you've selected.
