Does anyone have a MBP/Brother MFC Printer combination?

I'm trying to figure out how to do this. I know how to do it on a PC, but haven't figured it out on the Mac.

When I go to print a photo, I have figured out how to ask it to use photo paper... but I can't seem to find a way to access any part of a print dialog that allows me to set the print quality. I would like to use fine print quality on my pics and it's using draft.

I have looked through all the context menus and through the Brother printer control center on the computer.

I have a MBP, am running OSX v. 10.4.9 and using a Brother MFC-440CN. The printer is hooked up directly to my MBP via USB, not networked.

I have been printing my test pics through Preview. Maybe I should be using iPhoto or something?

Also I have scanned to file and can't seem to access any setting to change the default folder the scans save to. Right now they're saving automatically as .jpg in the My Photos root folder.

I would be grateful if any of you have tweaked this family of printers with a MBP in OSX and can give me any hints. I was a very experienced Windows junkie so this re-learning everything I know almost automatically is difficult. I know what I want to do, and how to do it on a PC, but I'm having a hard time translating that to the Mac. Even after a year. *sigh*

I love my Mac though, and will never go back.
