Hey,
Just wondering if any of you guys have an apple desktop (imac, mac mini, or mac pro) and also a laptop?
If so, how do you find it? How you you find syncing your email and documents etc.?

Does Macbook + Hackingtosh count?

I'm contemplating on switching my current desktop to an iMac to save on deskspace and reduce the vast amount of cable wiring. I do find it a bit tricky to sync up my documents between my laptop and desktop, and am hoping that Apple's iSync tool can help out in this department. Windows as far as I know doesn't provide a utility that does this out of the box.
Of course, the option to just use my existing monitor and use my MBP as my only computer is on the table, but I'm in the market for a large monitor as well as a gaming machine. It also helps to have a backup of the data on the MBP so thats another reason, and because of the primary reason to reduce cable-clutter, having a two computer setup (laptop + desktop) would work best. -
I wouldn't admit that on here, and if you really feel like it's a good idea to tell us you're doing something illegal, you may want to spell it right next time.

stealthsniper96 What Was I Thinkin'?
hahhah. why did i find that funny. but yea, putting that up heres not a good idea, youll get in trouble. -
Is it an iMac, Mac Mini or Mac Pro, or a previous Mac desktop? If not, it doesn't, obviously.
I want to remind everyone that discussion on running Mac OS X on non-Apple hardware violates the Mac OS X EULA and therefore is not allowed here on NotebookReview Forums. Thank you
.
Anyway, no, I only have this MacBook. I wouldn't mind an iMac...but I'd much rather prefer a Mac desktop tower, and the Mac Pro is too much. -
Sam; I can't wait to get my new MacPro.
(sorry to rub it in.. I'm excited though!) On a side note... as happy as I am to be getting a new Mac, protect yourself with a good surge protector, and renters insurance... I had two computers blow that day.

I assume you mean too expensive, Sam; it certainly isn't too much machine. MacPro's are great desktops/workstations, whichever is the appropriate discription. I have one which I bought (ordererd from Apple) the day they became available. Bought a big screen to go with it because editing photos is its main purpose. This is the best machine I've ever owned, even though it in no way compares to the most current machines with their eight cores!
@OP: I also have a MBP, but to answer your question, I haven't done any syncing between the machines. Email is especially unimportant to me, or maybe I'm just way too lazy to bother with this. We have several other machines as well, both PC's and Macs. Syncing anything other than iPods to Macs (which is too simple to justify calling it syncing, IMHO LOL) just never seems worth the bother to me. Damn, am I lazy or what??
-
Well, both, really
. Too expensive, and too much power for my needs. I only want a nice media desktop, like a Core 2 Duo, upgradeable graphics...I don't need quad core or eight cores...
Its a fantastic machine, I know, just not for my category (cash-strapped and young student)

To be very honest, Sam, I don't need a machine like this either, and, truth be known, had the 24" iMac been available at the time I ordered the MacPro, I'd have bought it instead. Could have used the room on my desk it would have saved, too.
In case anyone is interested:
-
Man, that setup us awesome, bmwrob!
-
wow, how much did the Mac Pro run you? Did they always have a starting base price at $2700 (US)?
-
Damn that is nice. That must have cost you alot of mula.
-
That's one clean desk man! Mine has my G5 tower, two monitors (Both CRT, one is the old blue Apple 21"), my main toughbook, a beer, some tools, some boards for GPS projects, twizzlers, wallet, phone...
Yeah, it's a mess. -
All the important stuff is covered, Modly.
I don't remember the price; I bought the machine in Aug/Sep 06, I think. It's the standard machine except for the CPU. Paid a few bucks extra for the faster processor. -
Beer is important enough that I had to incorporate it into the Panasonic F.A.Q. that I wrote.
Did you upgrade the processor through Apple, or did you swap it out later on? I seen that Anandtech did it, which makes me happy that future processor upgrades can happen. -
I just ordered the 3GHz CPU with the machine. I remember reading that article, or one like it. At this point, though, I don't need anything more powerful. As I mentioned, the iMac would have suited me well if only it had been available at the time.

That's an impressive setup, and a squeaky clean desk to match.
I am thinking of replacing our main desktop in our house (a DELL) with a 24" iMac later this year. My wife's transition to mac is going smoothly and mine will start shortly. Both using MBPs. The iMac will be the final nail in the windows coffin in our household.
I also wish there was a simple customizable system to sync macs in the same household. Mainly for things such as photos, emails, documents etc... I guess one can make do with a 1TB time capsule shared in the house. -
Thanks for the comments about the desk, guys. Perhaps I should have mentioned that I did clean it up just a tad for the sake of the pictures. LOL
Usually you'd see a coffee cup, stacks of motorcycle and computer magazines, and pictures of my boys (taken off the desk for their privacy).
I think you'll enjoy the iMac, ATC; that's a really nice machine with a great screen. -
I've got a 20-inch iMac and 17-inch MBP. I dont usually keep the MBP there (its hiding my printer) but I was doing some updating on it and would rather do it over the wired connection.
I dont have any problems with syncing issues - I dont really transfer much between the two machines. What little I do, I use an external drive for. I have Office on the iMac and only use it to check my email (unless I'm away from home, then I can access thru the web).
-
The base price is 2700, but you could always downgrade to the 'crappiest' processor and take 300 bucks off.
Anyway I've been contemplating on getting a mac desktop, I hate sitting on a desk to use a computer, unless I'm gaming. When I use my windesktop at home I get an itchy feeling to go lie down on the couch and watch tv while I use my mbp for example, so I don't want to pay a lot of money for something
I won't use that much, mobility rocks; so yes, I think I am a laptop only man, that's why I think I will get a macbook air to compliment my mbp, but once the base price comes with ssd standard. -
That could take a year depending on how prices drop for them. It should be by maybe a year and a half.
Does anyone have an apple Desktop and Laptop?
