On the plastic MBs, the touchpad and/or palmrest get shiny after heavy use.
Do the alum laptops have the same issue ?

My friend has the white MB he has used it for about a year. On his particular laptop, yes, there is noticable shininess on the trackpad. But this depends on the user as well right. If the person eats with his hand a lot and then uses the trackpad the oils are bound to build up on there.
For the Alums, I haven't owned it long enough to comment. But I did read somewhere that since it is glass, it won't fade/wear/get shiny. How can glass get shiny right? -
the coating on the glass will probably wear and get shiney.. though it shouldn't effect use, since iPhones dont have the coating and still work fine. My old trackpad is very shiney, but my Multitouch one is still way too new to have shown a sign of fading in just a few months... but if it does, it should be soon, I use this thing constantly

I doubt it.. its a glass coating, just rub it off and its gone...

The shinyness is a result of the plastic wearing off. -

ive had my macbook pro since the day they were released in october of '08 and there is no difference in the coloring on the glass trackpad.
-
it does't get shiny because of the "Glasspad"
-
i dont think that it will wear out or get shiny, it is glass after all.
-
I've notice on my friend's Alu Macbook it is showing some signs of wear. It's not shiny at all but there are marks where his fingers are on the touchpad most. Considering how heavy he uses it, this is very good. Any plastic touchpad would have gotten shiny by this point for sure.

This is what I hate about touchpads. My old Compaq had this big white thumb print sized patch in the middle of the touchpad after heavy use... wow did it ever look terrible. If you're worried about wear (which will occur over time), take a look at the touch pad protectors. They are typically clear and don't affect performance too much.

Thanks ! I was not aware of touchpad protectors
Do the alum palmrests get any wear (same shiny issue) ? -
no,it is shiny from start...

Do the palmrests then get shiny-er or less shiny ?
Do the palmrests show wear ? -
As far as I have seen the Alu Macbooks show no wear or shiness over time.
While we're on the topic, the keyboard does show some wear and some of the keys get shiny after a while. -
No.AFAIK,it is like iPhone(same coating).
-
Try wiping it with a piece of cloth. There's a high probability tht it's grease from your hands.

I bought a "Best Skins Ever" full body skin for my Unibody MacBook 2.4 which includes protectors for the wrist area and trackpad area.
I promptly remove the trackpad protector after only a few days because it REALLY made the experience less enjoyable. The glass trackpad is so smooth and offers little to no resistance where as with the protector over top, it increased drag to the point where I was not happy with it. -
I'm pretty sure what you're touching isn't pure glass, and that it is coated with something. But it should hold up well, quite the bit of research went into the surface.

I've had my Aluminum Macbook since Christmas and I've had a steady 4 hours a day using it, and there's no wear on mine!
The trackpads are very nice and smooth, and they don't feel like they're going to wear out anytime soon!

I guess the coating on the glass touchpad will fade in about 2 years.
-
the coating on my 2.16ghz MBP did not fade, and i had it for about 2 years. May have been slightly shiny, but not noticeable unless you look at it from certain angles of light.
thus i don't think the unibodies will wear or fade anytime soon, even with heavy use. -
Just throw away the notebook! You are going to upgrade to the newest and greatest Apple notebook anyway!
Does the alum touchpad fade/get shiny ?
