I need help! I tried deleting some files on my external usb drive but it won't let me delete because it say I don't have permission. But I'm already the admin on OS X....
-
You are not the owner of the files. You need to go into 'Get Info' and change the file permissions to allow you to edit it.
-
well i load the files into my external from another laptop using XP. So how do I enable the external so I can edit/delete files on the mac?
-
select the files and choose 'get info' from the context menu, or apple+i
at the bottom of the get info window, there will be Ownership & permissions:
click the arrow and see if you can change it to read and write. -
under Ownership & Permissions, it says You can only read. Is there any way I can change this?
-
Do you have a NTFS format USB drive? If so then you can't write because OS X can't write on NTFS. Try to convert it to FAT32 or just transfer through another computer.
-
My exact reaction when reading OP's problems. Verify as this could be your problem
-
o really? OS X can't write on NTFS? So only Fat32?... But Fat32 doesn't allow transfer over 4gb.... this is bad >.<
-
osx is not everything some say it is...
-
FAT32 doesn't allow files over 4GB.
-
so, its a windows file system. its nice that apple took the time to get os x to read it.
Unlike windows which can't even see hfs -
if i run bootcamp, then can i modify a NTFS based external hdd?
-
Depends. NTFS is SUPPOSED to prevent writes to data that doesn't match the user who's data in belongs to.
But thats never stopped me. In fact, none of NTFS's supposed security has really done anything to make the file structure very secure. -
that's because most no one ever set it up properly. Most people just brag about how NTFS is more secure than FAT32 but never actually use the features.
Don't have permission?
