hi, i have the late 2007 17" macbook pro. i just did the latest MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update (i think it was 1.5.1)

now, this is the first time i did this update... so this might be a noob-ish question. so thanks for ur patience.

    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303364

i download the update (via software update) and some screen popup with the instruction on how i should proceed with the installation.

i click shutdown, and press the power button normally - without doing that 3-second+ hold down power button untile light flashes. then that apple logo with progress bar apears for a second or two, then it suddenly shutdown again and restart automatically.

now is has this done any damage to the computer or the EFI? coz it was quite scary  coz the system was interupted when that things popped up.

the second try, i did it all correctly (i think) i hold down the pwr button until the light flashes, and there is this loud long tone "beeeeeeep", then it begins the update, next time i arrive at the desktop it says something like your computer is up-to-date with EFI 1.5.1

what did the hold down the power button actually do? does it authorize the modification of the EFI chip? or is it just a one time off?

    thanks :)

this is my guess... just a guess, after thinking about it...

the EFI update application loads up some kind of disc image and schedule it to run of the harddrive at startup.

now this is what i really want to know. why do i need to press and hold the power button, instead of just normal press pwr button startup. what does this "press and hold" power button actually for?

what happened if without the EFI update i press the 3 second hold power button? anyone ever try? (im too scared to do it myself )

I think it resets some EFI settings to defaults or it's a very similar procedure.
