So, this isn't technically an iPhone forum, and I get that, but I know people ask iPhone questions here all the time, so.... whatever.

Anyway, I've noticed lately that embedded YouTube videos aren't working in Mobile Safari. Now, I know that the iPhone doesn't have flash, but there is an embedded video player that works with mpg videos (HTML5 sites seem to work fine) as well as YouTube. That way you can just click the video in a website and it will open up the standard video player. But none of those work for me on the iPhone.

I also know that not all YouTube videos are properly encoded for the iPhone. But these are videos that work fine in the YouTube app, their thumbnail just won't load in Mobile Safari for me to click. I get the gray box with the line through the play button instead. What's worse, is there are now sites where this happens that I know for a fact used to work fine. But now I can't get a single embedded YouTube video to work on my iPhone. Is anyone else having this problem? Maybe you could go to a site on your iPhone where the embedded video does work and I can check to show you the problem.

    I'm using a 3GS with 3.1.2.

Well, for example, the mobile YouTube site doesn't work at all. Every single video is showing as unplayable.

And yes, it is jailbroken. The only software I have that I can imagine is creatnv a problem would be Safari download manager. Besides that I have backgrounder, proswitcher, qtweeter, irealsms 3.0, and lockinfo.

The youtube site in safari works fine here on a 3GS 3.1.2 jb with Blackra1n.
Clicking on a random vid loads the youtube app.
I don't have any of those other apps installed though, so maybe one of them it the problem

I also had Insallous installed, but thought Hackulous Security might be the issue, so I uninstalled it (I just buy apps anyway, so I never use it). Still not helping.

it could be related to the jailbreak software.

i could imagine conflict with backgrounder and safari, or the download manager.

obviously, it is supposed to work, and works fine on 3.1.3 on a 3gs for me.

I got rid of the Safari download plugin and manager, and still no dice. My roommate also has a 3GS (an even newer one that requires a tether jailbreak) with most of the same software installed and has no issues here.

I'm really stumped with this one, as it doesn't seem to be a problem anyone else is having (can't find anything on Google either). I was going to just restore my iPhone, but I can't restore to 3.1.2 (easily anyway) and I don't want to lose the ability to jailbreak in the future.

Well, it's definitely something wrong with the jailbreak. Going into Safe Mode makes everything work fine. Don't know what the problem would be, though, since nobody else has it.

    well I'm on a jailbroken 3.1.2 3G.

    works just fine for me.

wish I could be more helpful, but all I can say right now is that it's not because it's jailbroken.

It's definitely the jailbreak. As I said, it works fine when in Safe Mode. I just don't know what the problem is.

Even though having to restore to 3.1.2 would be real pain, just had to to do it with my 3g, at least you will start with a working phone. Then as you add back each app you can see which is creating the conflict.

Have you tried uninstalling everything you added after the jailbreak?

    Figured it out.

I have Categories installed to minimize the clutter on my phone. I had all the Apple apps (including YouTube) in an Apple Category. I took it out and all works fine now. Weird.

Not so weird...categories essentially makes folders to organize your apps, so the shortcut link from within Safari wasn't correctly pointing to the youtube app anymore.

But Safari shouldn't be pointing to a shortcut. It should be pointing to the app binary which doesn't move. This would be like a video on your Mac not opening when you click it because you don't have a Quicktime shortcut on your desktop or dock. It just doesn't make logical sense.

For instance searching for an app in Spotlight on the iPhone still works fine even if it's in a Category folder. Because the app's binary hasn't moved and putting it in a Category folder doesn't remove it from the iPhone's app database either.
