Well Im here to stand up for the glossy display! I first bought a glossy disply on a laptop 2 years ago with my Dell XPS Gen2. I was utterly dazzled at how the screen "popped" saturated colors. I have used glossy in a variety of lighting environments and never ever had an issue.
When I purchased my first mac, the MPB 15" glossy was a no brainer for me. simply stunning picture and wonderful saturation. I even looked at several glossy screens to replace my Dell 2405FPW, but nothing came close from a resolution standpoint. 1920x1200 is just something i can live with out now on my desktop.
anywho GLOSSY all the way!

Hrm, I agree. I guess some people have a need for color fidelity.
I love glossy, but apparently a lot of people can't stand the glare and reflections. I don't see why...it just depends on how you focus on the screen.
Ah well, each to his or her own. -
Its more about how a person is going to use the laptop. If a person is going to be outdoors more often than being indoors then a matte display would work better. On the other hand if the laptop isn't going to be subjective to places with a lot of reflection on the screen then the glossy display will work better.

Dare I tread into a Mac forum...?
I noticed this and had to put in a vote for glossy as well. I dunno if the matte people know what they're missing, in the long run (and this coming from a current matte guy who's about to switch). And also, people can always get some sort of anti-glare screen or good screen protector on top of a glossy, which will do a pretty good job of toning glare down.
-
Ah well, it's all good cuz Apple is one of the few places that offers both as an option (go figure, it offers the options that no one else offers, and doesn't offer customization on the options that everyone else does offer) -
I'm not against glossy at all. I'm actually typing this very post on a laptop with a glossy screen right now (its been handed over to my brother soon, when I get my MBP). The colors on this screen are superb, but whenever I'm outside or somewhere where there is direct light shining on it it bothers me a bit. I could get one of those anti-glare things to help it out but then it becomes an extra thing to carry.
-
^^^ There are good quality screen protectors out there that work via static and also offer glare protection. This way, it wouldn't be any extra to carry around, plus you get the scratch, etc. protection.
-
Matte screens are ideal for people in an office setting (where there is alot of lighting) and those who deal with print.

i don't think most people are anti glossy at all. i think most people like glossy more.
im kind of neutral.
agree with below vv -
Interesting that you think people favour matte...I think glossy is dominant in the notebook industry.

Glossy all the way. No questions.

Both are great. Both look fantastic on the new 15.4" MBPs. Maybe it's those really bright LED backlights?
Regardless, the color accuracy argument is crap. All laptop screens are horrid at displaying accurate color due to the fact that they are using 6bit color instead of 8bit like most desktop lcd screens. I have a glossy and wanted to calibrate it, and you know what? It calibrates just the same as the matte display! Thanks go to Eye-One Display 2. -
Like Storm said, both are good. It's just a matter of personal preference. When I was on PCs my problem was that matte tended to not look as bright and colorful as glossy (don't know why), but when I saw the matte MBP next to the glossy MBP it was a no brainer. The matte just looked so much better and easier on my eyes.
Everyone seems to favor Matte Vs Glossy
