What is this? Should it be turned on?

It encrypts your entire drive (or maybe just your home folder, can't remember). There's some loss of performance, especially as your drive gets full.
There are utilities out there that use the same method as filevault for isolated folders and external drives as well. -
Unless you're concerned about the security of the data on your hardrive, no.

I hate this program! I turned it on and now it won't let me turn it off or uninstall it. It says I need 200gb of free space in order to "make a copy" of my HD before it will can turn off. The weird thing is that my HD is only 120gb. Needless to say I don't have 200gb of free space in order to do this.
Does anyone know how to get around this? I am seriously considering re-installing OSX and just starting over. -
I REALLY wish I had read this article before I turned mine on and filled up my disk. I've experienced exactly what they are describing in this article "unstable operating system, and loss of Safari and Dock data files". Its been very annoying to say the least.
FileVault?
