After fighting windows all of the last 20% of my
life i've sold ALL my pc's and moved back to a
    place of reason and organization.
Ordered a Macbook from my local Apple store,
I have not used OS/X since before I care to remember, I kinda hope it is like riding a bicycle and after a few falls (hopefully not spills) it will all be good.

OS X won't be too bad to learn.

There's a couple quirks here and there that are different and annoying, but largely the switch will be smooth.

Me too. I used to have bad experience with iBook 600MHz but I re-switched to MBP with Leopard and I can't think about coming back. Amazing experience. You will enjoy the introduction music+animation when you first launch your Leopard. Good luck.

You will be very happy with the switch. I just recently switched over from a vista based laptop to a macbook and i love it. I might even be able to convince my dad to get an iMac when he needs a new desktop.

Now if you truly mean it that you have had enough of Windows you will have to drop those Windows habits of how to use the computer. Your Mac experience will be a bit different however it will be pleasurable without doubt. Too many switchers leave Windows and come to the Mac expecting it to run like Windows and it ain't gonna happen.
If you are truly sick of Windows learn the Mac way so you don't end up posting what the Mac lacks that Windows has, if you do this then you are not truly done with Windows and you are not a true switcher. Good luck and let us know if you have questions. :)

I find OS X to be different, which I like and is why I have a Mac, but it's not necessicarily better or worse than Windows in my experience. 2K/XP are very stable. I prefer 2K and it's too bad they aren't supporting it anymore. Even the Vista on my ThinkPad seems to run much better with Service Pack 1.

Uhh dude... be understandable. If you are fed up of Windows and want to move on to something new, at first you only know the Windows way, so people come on here to ask questions about it... Doesn't mean they aren't true switchers... just means that they have a lot to adapt to. In the adaptation process people tend to point out what used to be done in Windows and ask if there is anything similar to help them with the switch. I find this understandable.

Just because you are switching to a new OS doesn't mean that the new OS is perfect and that the OS's way is always the right way(in this case, the mac way). It is whatever works for the user. And that is where customizability of the system is vital and partly why Windows has dominated over mac... because it allows the user to customize things to their preference rather than locking them into a restricted amount of ways to do things. I understand your frustration, and I know that you are trying to help, but i found a flaw with your theology and just wanted to point that out. :)

I'm curious what lack of customization you are referring to here?

Anyway, yeah...I agree that no OS is perfect. But since switching to OS X... I love it. I think if I couldn't have a mac, my daily OS would be Linux and my gaming rig, as always, would still be windows.

Actually I am looking forward to the challenge of the new os, I deal with computers on a support level every day and am just tired of the problems common users have using a computer period. It gets to the point where when I get home I do not want to even deal with windows after dealing on the phone for 8 hours teaching people how to basically use windows or the application they are trying to run
I am hopping osx will be a fresh challenge to me and let me be creative again and not carry the self imposed windows stigma home with me
    thanks for the vent

Windows has its plusses and minuses, as does Mac OSX. It's more a question of what software is available for the OS's for me, and right now thats dominated by Windows. But as Apple computers increase market share, you'll begin to find that popular software will find its way to Mac OSX.

Another question is more on personal preference. Try both, and see which one fits your usage pattern better. A safe route in trying out Mac OSX is to use Boot Camp / Virtualization (Fusion or Parallels). This way, you don't lose out entirely if you find Mac OSX isn't for you. You could just fall back to the Windows operating system anytime.

I got curious about Mac OS a couple weeks ago and installed it on my Dell m1330 to give it an honest try. Two days later I completely blew out my Windows partition, and within a week I went out and bought a new MacBook.

I used to be a rather vocal Mac basher too.....guess I should have tried it sooner! :)

I used to bash mac as well. And I still do... if it's a PPC.

I HATE PPC macs. They never work... I've had problems with roughly a dozen of the old PPC macs I've used. And many of those were G5 Towers...

You can add me to that list. Although I have to say that as much as I love OSX, Windows has its place too. For me, I still struggle to find some applications that are perfectly suited for my needs that are designed for OSX, where they are readily available for windows.

MSFT's own software, understandably, come to mind such as Office and Messenger (While I like iWork 08 a lot, I'm starting to come across things that bug me about it and I much prefer Office 2007 to Office 2008 for mac). Another one is RoboForm which I love (windows only unfortunately), and the mac equivalent - kind of - 1Password, is not as usable. QuickTax by Intuit (my favourite Tax software - I've tried 3 others) only makes windows versions of their software. I can think of quite a few more.

OSX has a lot going for it and will only get better. Heavy 3rd party support will be awesome for macs and that's improving daily, but as it stands right now, for many users myself included, we need both OSX and Windows. I still consider myself a switcher even though I use Vista and XP daily. :)

And that may be the cause of why I had bad memories of using a Mac.

Years ago when I used to work doing tech support for AT&T Worldnet Service, we had to provide Mac support as well. For me, that required extra training as I had never touched one prior to that.

I remember it being clunky, difficult to troubleshoot, and was rather lackluster overall. Based upon that experience, I had no desire to EVER use a Mac again......thankfully technology has evolved and I was able to give OS X an honest try. I'm not sure if it's because of recent frustrations with Windows, or just because I've used Windows so long that it's become stagnant and I needed something new to challenge myself with. Either way, best decision ever!!!! :)
