Firefox 3.0 for Mac

I tried it, and I prefer Camino...but it looks good.

that's mostly because my school doesn't support Firefox 3, which makes no sense for me to switch to Firefox 3 or use 2 different browsers.

 

Is this the final release or another release candidate?

Gosh it's awful. Scrolling is so laggy on it. Going back to Safari. I'm still waiting for the perfect browser...

 

I have tried it and I do not think that it is as beautiful as safari. I will stick with safari.

 

To fix laggy scrolling, go to: Firefox>Preferences>Advanced and check Enable Smooth Scrolling.

 

No. This is off by default for a reason. Scrolling up and down becomes even more laggy! The the page is still scrolling ages after my mouse wheel has come to rest. Worthless feature if you ask me. Until Firefox starts using GPU instructions to render pages like Safari, it will always be second best in my eyes. Safari's scrolling is smooth as silk... *sigh*

 

I like firefox now that it checks my spelling like Safari does. Nice add on. On and the weather add on is awesome to.

 

that is one thing I really do like about Safari, but they have improved it greatly with FF3, with smooth scrolling disabled completely it is still quite an improvement. All the other features of FF are worth it for me over that aspect of Safari. But yeah SmoothScrolling is very laggy, what I am saying is that disabling it makes it respond like normal and it is still quite smooth, although not as smooth as Safari.

and FireFox has had spell checking for a long time now, for the record.

another cool addition is the automatic QuickFind when you start typing anywhere on the screen, instead of having to press Cmd+F or "/" you can just start typing and it will automatically highligh what you are looking for, and if it is a link you can just type ot find it and press return to select it. In the Advanced preferences tab.

also Google's browser sync was discontinued, but luckily they have already updated Google Toolbar, and Mozilla has an excellent replacement for Browser Syn called Weave, that has all the same functionality.

as much as I do like Safari, I just can't live without some of the Add-Ons and features Firefox offers, take a look at my tool bar for example:





Google Autofill, Maps, Bookmarks, Translate, AdBlock, Google Reader and Mail shortcut Button, just can't get them in Safari and trust me it saves me a huge amount of time.

The main thing I use Safari for is working with my Animation Departments WIKI as it works best with Safari due to the way it was developed.

 

On my PC I have set so that if I type a keyword into the URL it will go directly to Google's "I'm feeling lucky" site. For example, when I type "facebook" into the url, it takes me to www.facebook.com

How do I get it to do it on FF3 on my Mac?

 

When I type facebook in my Firefox 3 title bar it automatically brings me to www.facebook.com...so I guess for me it's on by default?

FF3 probably use FF2's old settings.

To change URL Bar function go to "about:config" in Firefox (type it in URL bar), search for Keyword.URL and set it to "http://www.google.co.in/search?btnI=I%27m+Feeling+Lucky&q="

Works in both FF3 and FF2.

 

Oh, and I also can't stand the fact that the back button in FF3 is bigger than for the forward button. It feels like it's broken. But really, I quite like the look except for the lag in scrolling. That's the killer, especially since I spend most of my time scrolling up and down pages.

 

It STILL sends me to that. I even restarted Firefox.

It works awesome for me. Absolutely gorgeous.

I like Safari as well but just got too used to the FF keyboard shortcuts to adapt. (Especially tab switching which I do at a frenetic ADHD pace)

 

I personally don't believe I am suffering from laggy scrolling in Firefox. I suppose it would depend on what one terms as laggy. The scrolling in Firefox 3 for me might be 0.01 seconds slower than Safari, something I barely notice and therefore don't concern myself with. I suppose that for some those 0.01 seconds might be very visible and annoying.

 

I love FF3. It seems faster than FF2 and after reading this thread, I turned on smooth scrolling. I only use Safari when something doesn't work in FF. I've been using FF on windows for years so I never got too serious about Safari. My less than optimal Safari experience on Windows didn't help. So now with FF3, while I don't plan to switch off Safari as the default browser I have booted Safari off my dock and rely almost entirely on FF3.

I would imagine the reason I'm not having those lags mentioned in this thread is I'm on a relatively fast Penryn Macbook. No speed issues at all except now that I have FF3, FF2 seems to have been a lot slower.

 

There might be subtle differences in terms of scrolling in FF3 and Safari, but not on my mac. Not fussed

it's great so far!! scrolling has been improved and it does seem quicker!

 

scrolling is still smoother in safari compared to firefox.

firefox scrolls a chunk at a time, whereas safari scrolls a pixel at a time...

unless there is a way to change that.

hey, so you can use smooth scrolling in firefox... but its still not as good as safari.

i'm sticking to safari as the main browser, firefox for compatibility backup.

 

I don't mind the scroll delay too much.

I've been using Safari (holding out for FF3) so I've become a customed to certain things:
* Anyone know how to remap the "Next Tab" shortcut for Firefox? In Safari this was done in the System Properties > Keyboard Shortcuts.
* What kills FF3 for me on the Mac is the 3 finger navigation to move back/foward between pages. Am I just missing an option or something there?


Well, FF3 is here to stay on my work Windows machine (no more memory leaks, it would get up to 1.5 gigs memory usage after a week) ... but it looks like I'll be staying with Safari on my mac until I can find a workaround for these

completely agree, the difference is incredibly minor, but I agree that it is there, do you want Mozilla to completely rewrite its Application?

 

if you don't like the big back button you can just set the toolbar to use smaller icons, also you can easily download a theme to make it look completely identical to safari.

you should be more productive! don't scroll the internet to death! ^_^

another cool feature that should be on by default is multitouch back and forward, just press and hold Alt/Opt. and using two finger scrolling you can swipe left and right to go backwards and forward in the browser.

you should also be able to easily set keywords for your bookmarks as well. go to the Advanced section at the bottom of the page here:

and FF3 has really improved on the way it displays text, and is SIGNIFICANTLY faster, I can't imagine many Firefox users complaining about this update.

don't get me wrong. ff3 seems great and i like it, just not enough to stop using safari. maybe ff4.

but i'll still use ff when safari can't do something.

 

I still use Firefox when listing stuff on eBay, because Safari doesn't let you put pictures and stuff in your listings, for some reason... Really annoying!

 

For those that think FF3 isn't that pretty, check out the GrApple yummy(blue) theme. Makes it look very nice:

My main issue with Firefox was I didn't like its UI. With Firefox 3, I'm all set!

 

I like it in OSX, too. Much faster than the last version (and way faster than Safari), and there is no scroll lag on my machine at all.

The new FF on my Windows machine is a PITA, though. It hangs just as it did before the upgrade. Think I'll stay with Konqueror in Linux for now.

 

FF3 on my windows machine has been a huge improvement over the old version as well, on an XP machine.

 

I'm liking FF3 on my Mac and as a portable app on my windows box at the office.

 

I'm loving FF3 in general . FF3 on my Mac (will most likely replace Safari from now on), and FF3 on my PC!

Thats what makes browsing the web so much better.

Without it, the internet is so annoying ;p

 

I use Adblock Plus and Flash Block. Sometime, flash banners can be annoying. If you want to play a flash content (like in You Tube), one mouse click will do the job

I love firefox and all, but there is still an issue that is major enough for me to use safari... Why the hell cant you command/shift/ctrl click a bookmark to open it in a new tab?! I believe in windows you control click a bookmark to open it in a new tab (havent been on windows in a while), so where is this feature in ff for OSX? Would be happy to use firefox with the addition of this deal breaking feature.

 

To open anything in a new tab, you can either middle click or apple+click.

It works with links, bookmarks, and yea, its pretty simple.
