Well I did it, I have been thinking about it for a while and I have been deciding if a mac was right for me. I went out tonight and picked up the 17" mbp w/ the 2.8 ghz and a glossy screen. The matte screen just wasnt for me when I seen it up close. I must say that I am really enjoying it so far and it is way easier to use then I thought. I still have some things to learn but I think I can figure it out. I really like the keyboard and its layout. What is the current version of OSX? It says I have 10.5.7 but I have a snow leopard disk so I am not sure if I got it on here or not.

grats on your purchase. SL (10.6.1) is the current version. If it says you have 10.5.7 then you don't have SL installed. If you plan to install SL, I would suggest you do a fresh install.

To add in, the current version for Leopard is 10.5.8. Use "Software Update" to keep the system up to date. :)

Mett, congrats on your Mac purchase. :)

a new machine with a Leopard install.. there is little reason to do a fresh install, just pop in the Snow Leopard disk and let it do an upgrade. Its a piece of cake and you wont lose anything you've done.

What is a good reasonably priced headset to use w/ a Mac? My creative labs usb one does not appear to work with it for some reason.

if you plug in a USB headset it should show up in System Preferences under Sounds where you can choose it as the default input or output device.... Most USB headsets will automatically make themselves the defaults when you plug it in though.

I shudder at the thought of infecting my Mac with Windows. :p

W7 does look to be an improvement over Vista but I really don't have the need for Windows anymore. Well that and I refuse to buy W7 after I got ripped off by Vista. You may be different though so give yourself a few months for the novelty to ware off and you might be ready to do a dual boot.

Windows 7 is amazing, which you would know if you had actually used it (I recall you saying you had not used it yet from another post, excuse me if I am wrong.). I think he will love it, no *novelty* factor needed. I noticed he is a gamer, as he stated in the other thread, which makes Windows a superior choice overall anyway. Thank god for bootcamp.

Sorry for the rant, I just hate the elitist attitude and jaded response from a Vista user who think's it's remotely the same as Windows 7.

Anyway Mett, congrats! I'm sure you will love it, getting a new lappy always makes one feel like a kid at Christmas time. :)

ME was the worst OS that i have ever used in my entire life LOL Windows 7 from my experience testing it over the last 8 months was overall positive. It is definitely an upgrade from Vista.

You are excused. I tried the Beta before making the switch to Mac and have talked about it several times. W7 hadn't fixed any of the issues I had with basic usability and hence my shuddering at the though of putting Windows on my Mac. I did like some of the GUI changes in W7 but it didn't excuse the fact that I had problems with the OS not improving my core issues (networking being the largest). Opinions and experiences vary so I would be careful when tossing around elitist accusations.

Anyway I think we are getting off topic with the Windows vs Mac stuff.

O crap I'm sorry, I remember that post now! You can smack me. I wasn't trying to make it Windows vs Mac, I just wanted to reinforce that overall, he should have a very positive experience with both his laptop and Windows 7. I got the elitist attitude from acting like Windows on a Mac was a blasphemy or something, but no biggie. He will be a very happy user either way. :)

I agree, he should be fine with it.

Just to explain: I've just got a chip on my shoulder about Windows after Vista. It was more than just networking, I got hurt in the whole upgrade adviser program thing they put out. MS said I would be fine and able to use all aspects of the OS until I purchased it and installed it on 2machines only to find out otherwise. Then came the driver issues, networking, etc. I could understand a little if it was just one system but I had 4 machines running Vista in my house (2 older machines that were upgraded as I explained, 1 bought with the free upgrade the next month, and one brand new with Vista installed). All of them had networking issues even with different routers, modems and such. I had a really bad experience with Vista but understand that I am not the normal user.

I just upgraded from my original MacBook to the 2.66GHz 15" MBP. I was thinking of waiting, but decided I'd waited long enough. I ran Windows 7 on my PC desktop (which I've since gotten rid of) and it was definitely a nice improvement over Vista. Still, I prefer Snow Leopard hands-down, but that's a personal preference. Right now I'm amazed at the battery life on this machine. I get 6+ hours using integrated graphics easily and at least 4 using the 9600M. I don't game too much (just WoW, Spore and it should be able to handle SC2), so that's not a factor. A friend just got the 2.8 matte with the SSD and loves it. I just need to order a miniDisplayPort-to-HDMI cable and I'll be set.
