hi everybody, for 6 year stuck with Windows, finally today i can own my first old-age iBook, It generally fit my suite with 2 battery which can up to 6h using, beautiful screen and quite a light laptop. However i need some problem with my iBook:
- It's quite slow. I see in "About this Mac" it just has 384 Mb Ram. I intend to upgrade Ram, but i dont know how much Ram my iBook would recognize.
My Ram info:
Size: 256 MB
Type: SDRAM
Speed: PC133U-333
Status: OK
which bus does iBook run, 133 or 333 Mhz.
-Another problem is hard drive,i think it's too old and slow.I also want to upgrade it,but i dont have Tiger install disk (which suit my ibook specification). May i use any disk
Thanks for any reply ^^.

Okay, I'not a Mac user but i can offer some help. SDRAM is cheap just buy some. Can't go wrong there. At worst I won't see all your RAM. If you have a manual check how mach RAM your mobo supports. Just go for 1Gb and I think you'll be fine.
If you can find out which HDD goes into your iBook buy a similar one thats larger and faster. Just use cloning software to transfer your OS and files to the new disc if you don't have and OS disc. Dunno if Tiger is limited in some way. -
The cheapest 256MB SD-RAM stick I could find cost about 3 times as much as the cheapest 1GB DDR2 stick available.
Prices may vary a bit depending on where you look, but SD-RAM is *not* cheap. (And I doubt you can even find a 1GB stick. That stuff is ancient) -
There are 1gb sticks, but those are expensive. I meant 1gb as a nice goal. Chances are the iBook doesn't even support that much.
-
i think 1Gb which ibook support can be easily found because i'm in China. However i found some in Google that iBook just support 512Mb + 128Mb built-in) but i dont know what bus
I'm not clearly know how to transfer OS from hd to another hd. -

Can you tell us more about your iBook? Which model iBook are you using? The G4? or the G3?
And here's an excerpt from Wikipedia. I don't you'll want to upgrade your hard disk.
-
yeah, you may want to avoid trying to upgrade the hard drive. I tried in my last gen ibook, and broke the logicboard (luckily it was where a lot of problems were with ibook boards and i got it under warranty.) You literally have to disassemble the entire notebook to do it.
My bus speed is 133Mhz. (which should be the max of any ibook)
If you want to find all specs about the machine, which will also help us help you, open System Profilier in the utilities folder (which is in the applications folder). -
i dont know how to capture desktop picture as Windows, so i copy them

based on your model number i found these sites that should help you:
http://eshop.macsales.com/Descriptions/specs/ibook32vram.html
http://eshop.macsales.com/Descriptions/specs/ibookearly2003.html
so your max ram is 640MB. However, i will suggest not putting to much money into it. It is pretty old, but it should still work good. -

Max RAM supported by your iBook is 640MB as RadcomTxx already said.
You said you don't have a Mac OS Install DVD...
Don't install older versions of Mac OS than what comes with your computer. If you want to reinstall OS X, contact <noparse>Apple</noparse>Care at 1-800-APL-CARE. You can order a replacement Tiger Install DVD for about US$16. -
i upgraded my hard drive successfully ^^
But when I use my old hdd as external, my ibook cant recognize ><
First time using Mac with iBook, i hav some question
