...instead of having it inside your laptop's hard drive. My library is about 28gigs, so I would need the 32gb ipod touch. Any disadvantages? Something I should know?

You won't have a full 32GB of memory, it'll be formatted to something around 27GB-28GB. If you have ATT iPhone FTW! If you have ATT you should seriously consider an iPhone instead, I have one (got it in July) and love it! The most memory an iPhone can hold is 16GB, though.

Well I was talking about the ipod touch. I don't care for the iphone at the moment. Right now I am perfectly happy with my nokia e50, which has a native windows live messenger app (main reason why i still keep that phone and not succumbed to an iphone) running on edge (fastest connectivity we have here). Maybe once microsoft releases something native for the iphone I might change my mind, but I need to be logged on messenger 24/7 for work and keeping in touch with my friends (I always seem to be out of town :p)

Anyway, the ipod touch comes in 8, 16, and 32gb flavors.

The reason why I am asking is that for some odd reason I've been wanting a macbook air lately, instead of a macbook pro, maybe from all the trips I've done and have yet to do, and for that a lighter laptop would be nice, maybe because I want something different, I don't know, and if I wanted to put my music library inside the computer it would take up a lot of space, so I thought maybe get ipod touch and have it all there...

From the sounds of it, you would be better off with a standard iPod.

Anyway, the disadvantages of keeping your entire music library on your iPod instead of your HD would be that you will lose the ability to synchronise your music automatically with your computer. New music will have to manually transferred onto your iPod, as synching it with a PC without the music will erase your iPod.

Damn that sucks. I honestly don't know why I'm looking for reasons to get an air. And it's not like I can't carry around an mbp on trips, it's the lightest 15 inch lappie. gah!

if im not mistaken, once you put everything on the touch, and delete it from the computer, itll delete it from the touch the next plug in.

if you say manually sync, itll still delete it next time you sync. you could "manually manage music" but then you lose playlist workings :( which i love.

One of the exact reasons iPods suck. I just got a new computer and I haven't hooked up my iPhone yet because I don't want to have to completely delete everything (contacts, music, videos, etc.)...

You should consider a 80GB Zune instead of an iPod:

If I were in your shoes and wanted a MBA knowing that I would not have enough space on my laptop for all my music(95GB), I would get an external hard drive. I would load up the external hard drive with all of my music and sync at home when I have the external HD with me. Then once I have all my music on my iPod, I would leave it home and only take the MBA and iPod with me which would enable me to treat it as if I had all my music on my iPod and would take up 0 space on my MBA.

That is what I suggest you do, I see that as the easiest way out for you and it ain't all that much of a hassle either. Also, external HDs are getting very cheap so you should be fine. :)

Well I already have one of the new mybook drives, 160gb, so at least that is out of the way. Now I have one month to decide wether I want a new mbp and 8gb ipod touch, or mba with a 32gb ipod touch. Maybe an imac to compliment all that.

man i hate apple. why do they have to make everything so appealing? at least to me anyway :p

    edit:

michael, i actually like the zune, the problem is that it's not gonna play nice with itunes, which is what i like to use.

Don't you already have a Santa Rosa MBP? The updates aren't worthwhile at all to pay another $2k to get a new one. I'd probably get a MBA if I was you, though if you don't already have a MBP, I'd defitinely choose that over the MBA. I almost got a MBP (because of it's really appealing style and OS X), but then decided Macs aren't really meant for gamers. I'm guessing you do have ATT sie ou have that Nokia. Apple released the iPhone SDK to developers and there's some really interesting apps coming out, including a lot of different chat programs, so you should consider a MBP and a 16GB iPhone.

Yeah, man, you definitely need to wait for a more crucial MBP update before splurging on one. Cmon man, you can wait some more. If you are going to go with MBP wait for a bigger update, these recent updates weren't that significant. The montevina update later this year is going to be much more critical for sure.

I don't have a macbook pro, right now I'm between computers, that's why I'm using what I have in my sig, and I don't live in the us, or in a country where iphone is supported, so no iphone either. And no, I don't feel like going through the troubles of unlocking and whatever.

Right now I live in Venezuela, my service provider is called movistar. If you live in europe you will be familiar with it. And I can't just buy an iphone with the promise that they will make great apps with the sdk. I saw steve's presentation and it was cool, specially spore, but promises are just that. Once they have stuff out that I find appealing then I will of course take the plunge.

The most important thing is that you have all your music managed by itunes. Thus perhaps if you want an air, you could get an external drive (for home) to leave all your music on. Then set iTunes to use this external as its library source (its also possible to have multiple music library's). Then it doesn't really matter what size ipod you get. Obviously the easiest is to have an ipod that fits your entire library, but this has never been the case for me. I have over 100Gb.. thanks to 20+ years of music addiction. I recently got an 8Gb iphone, to replace my aging 60Gb ipod. At the moment I have my ipod sync'd with my mb which has all my music on its 250Gb hdd.
How can I still sync you ask ????
Easy, just select the playlists you want on your ipod. Make a new playlist/s on you mac and bob's your uncle. Its really simple and the only hard bit is deciding which music you want to sync. You can also choose for photos, and everything else exactly what to sync. Thus you get the benifits of syncing without needing an ipod as big as your music tastes.

So to recap. You can get an air. And you can get what ever ipod size you want. You'll just need an external hdd for home to store all your stuff.
    a
    :)

ps perhaps a network hdd might be a good idea to go with all that "air" stuff.
ppss. Oh and if syncing isn't your thing, you can always choose to manually manage your ipod.
    good luck
